Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In recent times, an increased population experience troubles getting enough sleep. This can be due to the increased use of mobile devices before bed and bad sleep hygiene.
Firstly, most people use their phones on their bed instead of sleeping. This will make their brains used to staying awake because the brain and body are trained into knowing when to sleep. In addition, when people with sleep difficulties go to see doctors or therapists, they are advised to do certain things like put your phone away, sleep in a room that is cool, eat before going to bed so you do not wake up hungry, switch off the light and have a bath so you feel refreshed and calm in order to sleep and medications are prescribed only when these fail. According to researchers, about 55% of people develop better sleeping habits after sticking to their therapist advice and the remaining percentage of people would require medications or hopitalisation.
However, i think a good sleep habit can be built from childhood, especially in this generation where every child has a mobile device. Individuals should set alarms and timers so that their phones can remind them to sleep. Additionally, encourage people to hangout more with families and friend to encourage human to human direct interactions and bonding. Some studies show that people tend to sleep better during holidays with relatives because they are more relaxed.
In conclusion, doctors advice 8 hours of sleep for humans daily and many people are sleep deprived. Going to bed the same time everyday and restricted use of mobile devices can help curb this pandemic.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While you mention that lack of sleep leads to 'troubles', you do not explicitly detail the specific health or cognitive consequences (e.g., impaired concentration, weakened immune system, or mood disorders) as requested by the prompt. The solutions provided are practical, such as sleep hygiene and professional intervention, but the explanation of the 'problems' remains underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, ensure that each part of the question is explored with equal depth and specific supporting examples.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'However' to guide the reader. However, the transition between ideas is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'the remaining percentage of people would require medications or hopitalisation', where the link to the previous context could be smoother. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, but the final conclusion is quite brief and does not fully synthesize the main points discussed in the body paragraphs.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'sleep hygiene', 'sleep deprived', and 'pandemic' in a relevant context. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'hangout' (which should be the verb 'hang out') and 'hopitalisation' (spelling error). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and variety of less common lexical items that would be required for a higher band score. Focus on using more academic collocations to enhance the sophistication of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'the brain and body are trained into knowing when to sleep' is slightly awkward, and 'doctors advice' should be 'doctors advise'. There are also issues with pronoun consistency, such as switching between 'people' and 'your' within the same sentence. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring subject-verb agreement will improve your performance.
