Student answer (Band 6.5)

Sleep consistency has become a widely debatable topic all over the globe. Many people reported that they are having hard time sleeping and unable to get enough sleep for the day. Lack of sleep can be caused by multiple factors like mental health, physical wellness and many more. This essay will discuss the possible causes of less sleep and will discuss the possible solutions for the issue.

I will start with discussing the causes that affect the sleep quality and duration. Firstly, mental health is the primary cause of less sleep. This is because the mind is indulged in thoughts which will not let brain relax and sleep for longer period of time. Secondly, overall physical health can directly impact the quality and quantity of sleep in human body. This is due to the fact that good physical health will lead to a better blood circulation cycle and ensures a good quality sleep. In addition to that, lack of physical workout also contributes to uneven sleep cycle as body is not tired enough at the end of the day to sleep which causes difficulties in sleeping. Therefore, there are multiple causes which can cause problems getting enough sleep.

The possible solutions for this issue will include more physical workout, prioritizing mental and physical health and fixing sleep pattern and sleep schedule. People should ensure that their body is getting enough workout and exercise for muscles to relax and recover while sleeping. This will ensure better sleep patterns and frequency. Moreover, it is best to work on mental and physical health to ensure a healthy body. Study depicts that sleep quality is directly proportional to mental health. Also, a report shows that most of insomnia cases are directly linked to mental health.

To conclude, lack of physical workout, mental health and physical health can directly influence the quality and quantity of sleep. However, following a proper workout schedule and working on mental and physical health will result in better sleep.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The essay addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. However, the response is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth. While you mention mental and physical health as causes, you do not explicitly detail the specific 'problems' (consequences) that lack of sleep causes, such as cognitive impairment, irritability, or increased risk of disease. Instead, you focus on the causes of the sleep deprivation itself. To improve, ensure you clearly distinguish between the 'causes' of the problem and the 'consequences' of the problem as requested by the prompt. The ideas are relevant but could be more thoroughly developed with specific examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'In addition to that', and 'To conclude' to guide the reader. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. For instance, the phrase 'mental and physical health' is used frequently throughout the text. To reach a higher band, try to vary your cohesive devices and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that transitions smoothly into the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'insomnia', 'proportional', and 'duration'. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'having hard time sleeping' (should be 'having a hard time') and 'indulged in thoughts' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on collocations—words that naturally go together—will help improve the natural flow of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are several grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('the' mind, 'a' better blood circulation) and minor subject-verb agreement issues. For example, 'Many people reported that they are having' should be 'Many people report that they have'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage and ensure consistent verb tense usage throughout your paragraphs.
