Student answer (Band 6.5)

Sleep consistency has become a widely debatable topic all over the globe. Many people reported that they are having hard time sleeping and unable to get enough sleep for the day. Lack of sleep can be caused by multiple factors like mental health, physical wellness and many more. This essay will discuss the possible causes of less sleep and will discuss the possible solutions for the issue.

I will start with discussing the causes that affect the sleep quality and duration. Firstly, mental health is the primary cause of sleep deficiency. This is because the mind is indulged in the thoughts which will not let the brain relax and sleep for longer period of time. Secondly, the overall physical health can directly impact the quality and quantity of sleep in human body. This is due to the fact that good physical health will lead to a better blood circulation cycle and ensures a good quality sleep. In addition to that, lack of physical workout also contributes to an uneven sleep cycle as body is not tired enough at the end of the day which causes difficulties in sleeping. Therefore, there are multiple causes which can cause problems in getting enough sleep.

The possible solutions for this issue will include more physical workout, prioritizing mental and physical health, fixing sleep pattern and sleep schedule. People should ensure that their body is getting enough workout and exercise for muscles to get tired so that they relax and recover while sleeping. This will ensure better sleep patterns. Moreover, it is best to work on the mental and physical health to ensure a healthy body. Study depicts that sleep quality is directly proportional to the mental health. Also, a report shows that most of insomnia cases are directly linked to mental health.

To conclude, lack of physical workout, mental health and physical health can directly influence the quality and quantity of sleep. However, following a proper workout schedule and working on mental and physical health will result in better sleep.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. However, the task achievement is limited by the lack of depth in the discussion of 'problems'. While you mention that mental health and physical health are causes, you do not explicitly detail the negative consequences (e.g., cognitive impairment, productivity loss, or chronic disease) as requested by the prompt. The ideas are presented but remain somewhat superficial. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples of the consequences of sleep deprivation rather than focusing primarily on the causes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'In addition to that', and 'To conclude' to guide the reader. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally repetitive, particularly in the final paragraph where you restate the causes rather than synthesizing the solutions. The use of referencing is generally clear, but some transitions feel mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'deficiency', 'proportional', and 'insomnia'. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice and collocation, such as 'indulged in the thoughts' (should be 'preoccupied with thoughts') and 'blood circulation cycle' (which is slightly unnatural). The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your ideas clearly, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing like 'physical health' and 'mental health' multiple times in close proximity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the' mind, 'the' body) and subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'Many people reported that they are having hard time' should be 'a hard time'). There are also minor punctuation and phrasing errors throughout. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on article usage and consistent verb tense would significantly improve your accuracy.
