Student answer (Band 7.0)
It is undeniable that nowadays many people are suffering more from a lack of sleep than ever before. In this essay, I will give reasons behind not getting enough sleep and will give possible solutions for the problem.
To begin with, there are a plethora of reasons why people are suffering from insomnia. The first and foremost reason is continuous attention to screens. In other words, people are always attached to their phones and surfing social media which results in lack of sleep. For example, individuals nowadays use their phones till late at night scrolling unlimited reels through social media. Secondly, people have irregular schedules for work and due to this, they do not have a proper time to sleep. For example, a person who is working at a restaurant needs to work sometimes at night and sometimes in the morning which is confusing the body when to sleep and when to wake up. Moreover, sometimes stress or having a drink or caffeine at late night can result in no sleep.
However, there are some solutions to tackle this problem. Firstly, a person needs to stop using the phone late night and put the phone aside a few hours before sleeping. Moreover, the temperature and light of the room also matter. According to the experts, cold temperature and dim light are the perfect conditions for sleep. Apart from that, people should avoid drinking alcohol or caffeine before bed because caffeine awakes the body for five to six hours. Lastly, many people are suffering from the stress which results in lack of sleep. Therefore, people need to meditate and yoga to deal with stress.
To conclude, the main reasons behind lack of sleep are excessive amount of phone time, drinking caffeine and taking stress, and to tackle this problem, people can avoid phone at night, no drinks or coffee at night and most importantly, people can do meditation and yoga.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and the potential solutions. Your ideas are relevant and clearly presented. However, the development of your points is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention that stress causes sleep issues, you could have elaborated more on the specific physiological or psychological consequences of chronic sleep deprivation to reach a higher band. The structure is logical, and your position is clear throughout the essay. To improve, try to expand on your examples with more depth and nuance rather than listing them briefly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Moreover,' and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, some of the transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the use of 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' and 'Moreover' is functional but lacks variety. Additionally, some sentences could be better connected to improve the flow of information. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow, which meets the requirements for a solid band 6.5 or 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'insomnia,' 'plethora,' and 'physiological' (implied). However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, you wrote 'people need to meditate and yoga,' which should be 'practice meditation and yoga.' You also used 'caffeine awakes the body,' where 'stimulates' or 'keeps the body alert' would be more precise. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands. Focus on learning collocations and more precise academic verbs.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'people are always attached to their phones and surfing social media which results in lack of sleep' lacks a comma before 'which' and uses 'in lack' instead of 'in a lack.' You also have minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'at late night' (should be 'late at night') and 'the stress' (should be 'stress' in general). These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band score.
