Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is undeniable that nowadays many people are suffering more from a lack of sleep than ever before. In this essay, I will give reasons behind not getting enough sleep and will give possible solutions for this problem.
To begin with, there are a plethora of reasons why people are suffering from insomnia. The first and foremost reason is continuous attention to screens. In other words, people are always attached to their phones and surfing social media which results in a lack of sleep. For example, individuals nowadays use their phones till late at night scrolling unlimited reels through social media. Secondly, people have irregular schedules for work and due to this, they do not have a proper time to sleep. For example, a person who is working at a restaurant needs to work sometimes at night and sometimes in the morning which is confuses the body when to sleep and when to wake up. Moreover, sometimes stress or having a drink or caffeine at night can result in no sleep.
However, there are some solutions to tackle this problem. Firstly, a person needs to stop using the phone at night and put the phone aside a few hours before sleeping. Moreover, the temperature and light of the room also matter. According to the experts, cold temperature and dim light are the perfect conditions for sleep. Apart from that, people should avoid drinking alcohol or caffeine before bed because caffeine awakes the body for five to six hours. Lastly, many people are suffering from stress which results in a lack of sleep. Therefore, people need to practice to deal with stress.
To conclude, the main reasons behind lack of sleep are excessive phone time, drinking caffeine and taking stress, and to tackle this problem, people can avoid phone at night, no drinks or coffee at night and most importantly, people can do meditation and yoga.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The essay addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact of screen time and irregular work schedules. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For example, while you mention that lack of sleep causes problems, you do not explicitly detail the specific consequences (e.g., health issues, decreased productivity, or mental strain) as requested by the prompt. The response focuses more on the causes and solutions rather than the consequences. To reach a higher band, ensure each part of the prompt is explored with equal depth and specific examples.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for causes and solutions, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices like 'To begin with,' 'Secondly,' and 'However' to guide the reader. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions are repetitive or mechanical. For instance, the conclusion simply lists the points mentioned earlier without adding a sense of finality or synthesis. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid rather than relying on simple list-like structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'insomnia,' 'plethora,' and 'continuous attention.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'taking stress' is not standard English; 'experiencing stress' or 'suffering from stress' would be more natural. Similarly, 'caffeine awakes the body' is slightly awkward; 'caffeine stimulates the nervous system' would be more precise. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'which is confuses the body' (should be 'which confuses') and 'no drinks or coffee at night' (which lacks a verb). Additionally, there are minor issues with articles and prepositions, such as 'the temperature and light of the room' where 'the' is sometimes unnecessary. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring every sentence has a clear main verb.
