Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the consequences of sleep deprivation and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as mentioning workplace performance and health, and suggesting meditation and diet. However, the development is somewhat repetitive, particularly in the second paragraph where the link between sleep and job performance is belaboured. While the position is clear, the essay would benefit from more nuanced exploration of the causes beyond just 'hectic schedules' and 'earning money'. Overall, the response covers all requirements of the task sufficiently to meet the criteria for a band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', 'Apart from that', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, though some transitions between sentences feel abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, and there is a clear overall progression of ideas from the problem to the solution. The structure is sufficient to maintain a coherent flow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common collocations, such as 'hectic schedule' and 'significant ways'. However, there are recurring issues with word choice and form, such as 'badly effect on' (should be 'badly affects') and 'the company fired these employees' (which is slightly informal). The range is sufficient to discuss the topic, but the lack of precision and occasional errors in word formation prevent a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and prepositions, such as 'drawbacks not getting' (should be 'of not getting'), 'unable to getting' (should be 'unable to get'), and 'lack of sleep cause' (should be 'causes'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some unnecessary commas. These errors are noticeable but do not impede the overall communication of the ideas.
