Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often argued that individuals have difficulty getting sound sleep. This is the most common problem among people, and its causes are workload pressure and a lack of physical activity. This essay will discuss the problems and solutions in the upcoming paragraphs.

To begin, most people working in high positions face sleep issues. To expound, top managers in a company have higher responsibilities, which they need to delegate among staff members. In short, they run the company, and if something is misdelegated by them, it will create financial risks that affect the overall goodwill. Moreover, in the long run, it causes stress as well as anxiety issues that disturb their sleep pattern because they need to work for long hours. Furthermore, jobs such as scientists, space exploration, and doctors face high risks. At the time of research or surgery, even a minor mistake can create a serious injury to patients or staff working under them. For example, doctors and scientists, when doing research, spend unlimited hours at a research centre, which causes mental issues and affects their sleep patterns.

The solution to this problem is not straightforward due to the magnitude of the reasons cited above. Firstly, managers need to hire trained candidates who can easily handle the problems in their absence, which helps them restrict working long hours at the office and devote their time to relaxing or spending quality time with their family members. Furthermore, they need to balance their work schedule so that they can have enough time for physical activities, which can reduce mental pressure and improve well-being. For instance, people who utilize their spare time by doing yoga and running have fewer sleep issues than those following a sedentary lifestyle.

In conclusion, workload pressure causes stress and anxiety at the workplace, which creates sleep issues in one's life. However, regular exercise such as yoga and running can help overcome these issues.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat uneven. The focus on 'top managers' and 'scientists' is specific, but the link between these roles and the general population's sleep issues could be more clearly articulated. The solutions provided are logical and directly address the causes mentioned. To improve, ensure that the connection between the specific examples and the broader topic is more explicit, and consider expanding on the consequences of sleep deprivation beyond just 'mental issues' to include physical health impacts, which would provide a more comprehensive answer.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problems from the solutions. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother in the second paragraph. The referencing is generally clear, though the transition from the specific examples of doctors to the general conclusion about sleep patterns could be tightened to improve the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some topic-specific terms like 'workload pressure', 'sedentary lifestyle', and 'delegate'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing. For instance, 'mental issues' is quite vague. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items related to health and professional stress. The word choice is generally accurate, and there are no significant spelling errors that impede understanding, but the vocabulary lacks the sophistication required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show control over basic grammar, and your meaning is always clear. There are some minor errors, such as 'jobs such as scientists... face high risks' (the job itself does not face the risk, the person does) and 'create a serious injury to patients' (which is slightly unnatural phrasing). While you attempt complex structures, they are occasionally slightly awkward. To improve, focus on increasing the variety of complex sentence forms and ensuring that subject-verb agreement and prepositional usage are consistently accurate throughout the text.
