Student answer (Band 6.5)

A peaceful state of mind can be achieved by having proper sleep at night.

But, nowadays, because of busy routine life, it becomes very difficult for have proper amount of sleep. This results in lot of problems for people not having proper sleep patterns. In the upcoming paragraphs, I'll elaborate side effects of this and suggests some methods for tackling this problem.

To begin with difficulties of insufficient hours of sleep ,there are many. First of all, it triggers stress element in the entire human body. People having less sleep at night lacks full concentration at work because of stress, which have a huge impact on their productivity at work. Secondly, it is very important for people to have proper sleep to live a healthy life because failure to do so lead to number of health problems in their daily life like high blood pressure, dark eyes circles, back pain, reduced skin glow etc.

However, there are number of methods by which people get sufficient amount of sleep. Firstly, people have to follow strict and disciplined schedule in their life. This includes waking up early in the morning and sleeping early at night. For example, world renowned scientist, Albert Einstein usually took 8 to 10 hours sleep every night for his proper brain functioning. Secondly, people should give more importance to exercise in their daily life. By exercising 1 to 2 hours everyday, people can have proper sleep at night and this can make a huge impact in their health too.

At last, in my opinion, every person should get required hours of sleep every night no matter whatsoever. There is no exception to this at all. Sleep means giving rest to brain and that means giving rest to the entire body which is the most important thing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as mentioning stress, productivity, and health issues like high blood pressure. Solutions like maintaining a disciplined schedule and exercising are also clearly presented. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the link between sleep and 'dark eyes circles' or 'skin glow' is a bit informal and could be better explained in a more academic tone. The position is clear throughout, but the essay would benefit from more depth in the supporting arguments to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'First of all', 'Secondly', and 'However'. While these are functional, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition between the introduction and the first body paragraph is abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the phrase 'difficulties of insufficient hours of sleep, there are many', which feels a bit disjointed. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical, but the use of cohesive devices could be more varied and natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'productivity', 'disciplined schedule', and 'brain functioning'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'busy routine life' (instead of 'busy lifestyle') and 'stress element' (which is slightly unnatural). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Some phrasing, like 'no matter whatsoever', is informal and not well-suited to an academic essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'difficult for have proper amount' (should be 'difficult to have'), 'people... lacks' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'failure to do so lead' (should be 'leads'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. More attention to subject-verb agreement and article usage would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
