Student answer (Band 7.0)

physical exercise - gym walk, help destress the body

proepr routine - no phone before 1 hour bed

Undoubtedly, sleep is one of the most essential aspects of a healthy lifestyle, as it allows both the body and mind to recover. In the contemporary era, it has been noticed that not enough people in society are getting proper sleep.

On one hand, there are a number of issues that can arise from lack of sleep. The most prominent one is, being lazy all day because the body did not get proper rest at night time. To clarify, when the human body does not recover at night, eventually it will be tiring during the day. As a result, the person will not be able to concentrate at work or studies due to improper sleep. Apart from this, lack of sleep can cause mental illness such as depression. To explain, the individual will be up all night and overthinking about the topics that they should not which will ultimately make them depressed in life.

On the other hand, there are several solutions for not getting enough sleep. The predominant one is, having a proper night schedule which will send signals to the brain to sleep. To explicate, having a night schedule that means no phone or any digital device 1 hour before bed. Instead of phone doing skincare or reading books that will help the mind to relax and help in sleeping on time. Furthermore, doing some physical exercise such as a gym or walk. This is because going to the gym not only helps physically but also mentally. It helps the body to release all the stress while listening to the favourite music or podcast.

To conclude, lack of sleep can cause serious mental issues not just physical however all of this can be resolved by changing few daily habits such as following a night routine or doing any physical exercise regularly.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact on concentration and mental health, and the suggestions of a digital detox and exercise are practical. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of mental health issues is a bit repetitive, and the solutions could be expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The position is clear throughout, and the structure is appropriate for an IELTS Task 2 essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On one hand', 'Apart from this', and 'Furthermore', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problems from the solutions. To improve, you could vary the cohesive devices further and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural rather than relying on standard linking phrases.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication. You use some topic-specific terms like 'healthy lifestyle', 'mental illness', and 'digital device'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'not enough people in society are getting proper sleep' (better: 'a significant portion of society suffers from sleep deprivation') and 'overthinking about the topics that they should not'. Expanding your range to include more precise collocations and less common lexical items would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'the most prominent one is, being lazy' (incorrect punctuation/structure) and 'changing few daily habits' (missing article). There are also minor issues with subject-verb agreement and word order. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band. Focusing on sentence variety and proofreading for small errors like articles and prepositions will be beneficial.
