Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as physical health issues like 'sore muscles' and the impact of social media on sleep patterns. However, the development is somewhat limited; the solutions provided, such as 'powernaps' and 'medical assistance', are mentioned briefly without deep exploration. The personal example provided in the final paragraph is a good attempt to support the argument, but it focuses more on the student's history than on general solutions. To reach a higher band, the student should expand on the 'why' and 'how' of the solutions with more detailed reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic progression of ideas from the introduction to the problems, solutions, and a personal example. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For instance, the transition between sentences could be smoother; phrases like 'On the other side' are used, but the connection between ideas within paragraphs could be more sophisticated. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could benefit from more varied linking words to improve the flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'sleep deprivedness' and 'academic performance'. However, there are several spelling errors ('amoung', 'faceb', 'laking', 'dring', 'thet', 'persistant', 'docter', 'baskteball') and some awkward collocations like 'lacking behind'. These errors occasionally distract the reader, though they do not prevent understanding. To improve, the student should focus on accuracy in spelling and use more precise academic vocabulary to elevate the tone of the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('sleeping difficulties has been'), punctuation errors (comma splices like '...humans, There are...'), and incorrect verb forms ('I has so much stress'). While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and punctuation limit the score. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and ensuring that sentences are correctly punctuated, particularly avoiding the overuse of commas where full stops are required.
