Student answer (Band 7.5)

Nowadays, many people complain that they are experiencing difficulties in getting enough sleep. This problem has become common because of busy lifestyles, stress, and the excessive use of electronic devices. Lack of sleep can cause several problems for individuals, but there are some effective measures that can help people improve their sleeping habits.

One of the major problems caused by insufficient sleep is its effect on physical and mental health. When people do not get enough rest, they often feel tired and have low energy during the day. This can reduce their productivity at work or school and make it difficult for them to concentrate on important tasks. Furthermore, continuous sleep deprivation may lead to serious health issues, such as a weak immune system, weight gain, and heart-related problems. For instance, many office workers who sleep for only a few hours because of long working hours often experience stress and poor performance.

There are several solutions that can help people overcome this issue. Firstly, individuals should create a fixed sleeping routine by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. This can help the body develop a healthy sleep pattern. Secondly, people should limit their use of mobile phones, computers, and other electronic devices before bedtime because they can disturb the natural sleep cycle. Additionally, regular exercise and avoiding caffeine in the evening can also improve sleep quality.

In conclusion, a lack of sleep can negatively affect both health and daily performance. However, by following a proper sleep schedule, reducing screen time, and adopting healthier habits, people can solve this problem and enjoy a better quality of life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying both the problems associated with sleep deprivation and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. For instance, the discussion on physical and mental health impacts is well-supported by examples like reduced productivity and immune system issues. The solutions provided, such as establishing a routine and limiting screen time, are practical and directly answer the second part of the prompt. The position is clear throughout, and the response is well-structured, providing a balanced view of the issue. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific, perhaps personal or anecdotal, examples to further extend the arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is smooth. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'For instance', 'Firstly', and 'Additionally' is effective and helps guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problems from the solutions. The referencing is clear, and the flow of information is consistent throughout the text. The essay demonstrates a good command of cohesive structures, making it easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'sleep deprivation', 'natural sleep cycle', and 'productivity'. While the vocabulary is accurate and conveys the intended meaning clearly, it remains somewhat functional rather than sophisticated. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation. To achieve a higher band, the student should aim to incorporate more precise or less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range and more nuanced control of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, and the writing is free from significant errors that would impede communication. Complex structures, such as 'When people do not get enough rest, they often feel tired...' and '...because they can disturb the natural sleep cycle', are used correctly. Punctuation is handled well, and the sentences are clear and well-formed. The control of grammar is consistent, and the few minor slips do not detract from the overall clarity of the message.
