Student answer (Band 6.5)

Getting enough sleep is a difficulty complained of by a lot of people in today's world. Mobile Phones and Stress can be the main cause of this problem. This can be resolved by minimising the usage of electronic devices and by doing meditation.

First and foremost, the reason behind not getting a good sleep is mobile phones. To explain, people use their phones every second of their breath, resulting in maximum screen time, which can affect sleep. For example, the person will not be able to sleep while using the phone, as it will not only disturb the eyes but also the mind; as a result, the person's mind will get distracted, which will affect sleep. Furthermore, one of the main reasons for this problem is stress. Many people get stressed out from different things, but one should not be stressed, as it will only affect their health and well-being. To elaborate, people take stress and because of that, their sleep schedule gets disturbed. For instance, if a student takes stress of their coming exam, he will not get good sleep and thus resulting by a headache.

People can limit their usage of mobile devices at night or whenever they want to sleep, as that will help them get a peaceful nap or an eight-hour sleep without any disturbance. People with stress will not be able to perform well at work or study. Moreover, they can do various exercises to get rid of sleep, like meditation, yoga or dance.

In conclusion, as sleep is an essential part of everyone's life, and it makes life less stressful, one should always draw a line while using mobile phones and do exercises to relieve stress, so as to get enough sleep for a better future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact of blue light from mobile phones and the role of stress. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the explanation of how stress affects sleep is repetitive, and the solutions provided, such as 'dance' or 'meditation', are mentioned briefly without sufficient elaboration on how they specifically mitigate the identified problems. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more detailed examples and explain the causal links between the problems and the proposed solutions more thoroughly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a basic progression of ideas, and cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used to link sentences. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and the flow between ideas is occasionally disjointed. For example, the transition from discussing mobile phones to stress could be smoother. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the phrase 'get rid of sleep' in the third paragraph, which is a lexical error that also impacts the coherence of that specific point.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'minimising' and 'essential', but the range is somewhat limited. There are also instances of awkward word choice or collocation errors, such as 'every second of their breath' (an unnatural idiom) and 'get rid of sleep' (which contradicts the intended meaning of improving sleep quality). Improving your control over collocations and avoiding informal or imprecise phrasing would significantly enhance this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'resulting by a headache' (incorrect preposition), 'takes stress of their coming exam' (incorrect collocation), and 'he will not get good sleep and thus resulting by' (faulty sentence structure). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some issues with sentence boundaries and comma usage. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and ensuring that complex structures are used accurately rather than just attempted.
