Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, lack of sleep has become a severe issue among all age group of people. There are many reasons behind this and we will discuss it in the coming paragraphs.

Firstly, the main reason for lack of sleep among youngsters is the work pressure. After graduation they are directly entering to the real world of work and competition. To align with the industrial standards they are forced to work over-time and carry difficult tasks. They are struggling to balance their work and life together. This creates more tension in their mind and its result is lack of sleep.

Another thing is peer group pressure. From the childhood children are forced to learn many things which is more than enough for them. Moreover, the teachers will give additional home works to the children. Also, the parents compel their children to study all the time by not letting them to do other extra curricular activities. This is the reason for the children not getting enough sleep.

In the case of older people, the main reason for the lack of sleep is old age diseases. According to the statistics, more than fifty five percentage of aged people are suffering from diabetes and related health issues. Diabetes people could not sleep for a long time and it is really hard for them to sleep in nights. They require additional medications like sleeping pills to have a good sleep.

In conclusion, there are many reason why the people are having difficulties getting enough sleep. It varies for each age groups. Work pressure, and family issues for the young age of people, health problems are for the aged ones, and educational pressure for the teenage group and these are the reasons for lack of sleep.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by identifying causes of sleep deprivation across different age groups. However, the second part of the prompt—'What can be done about lack of sleep?'—is almost entirely ignored. While you briefly mention that older people require medication, you do not provide a comprehensive discussion on solutions for the general population, such as lifestyle changes, time management, or medical interventions. To achieve a higher band, you must ensure both parts of the question are given equal weight and developed with sufficient detail. Currently, the ideas are somewhat repetitive and lack the depth required for a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Another thing', and 'In conclusion' to signal transitions. However, the progression of ideas within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, and the links between sentences could be more sophisticated. For example, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is quite abrupt. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed idea that flows logically into the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your points clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'work pressure', 'peer group pressure', and 'extra curricular activities'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'Diabetes people' instead of 'People with diabetes' or 'all age group of people' instead of 'all age groups'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and a wider range of academic vocabulary to express your ideas with greater sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'entering to the real world' (should be 'entering the real world'), 'by not letting them to do' (should be 'by not letting them do'), and 'fifty five percentage' (should be 'fifty-five percent'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex sentence structures.
