Student answer (Band 7.0)

Sleep is the most essential part of a human being. In today's world, many people believe that they have difficulties in getting good sleep. In this essay, I will explain two main reasons for this statement and will cite two solutions for this problem.

In this modern world, people are suffering from lack of balance in their work lives. Due to this, they come under severe stress and anxiety. The pressure of work and handling the family responsibilities forces them to overthink each and every thing. Eventually, overthinking will impact sleep. For example, The Times of New Zealand publishes a paper that shows that stress created by imbalance in work-life leads to insomnia in 80% of corporate workers. Furthermore, the rat race of earning more money and the showcase of their power of money make people worried.

According to health care practitioners, people should do regular exercise in order to boost their happy hormones, which eventually helps in getting good sleep. People can also pursue some activities that help them to get rejuvenated. Additionally, the government should set some rules for the workplaces that are in favor of employees, and the rules should be enforced strictly. For example, employees should be paid on public holidays and receive extra payments on extended hours.

To conclude, the main reasons for lack of sleep are not maintaining the work-life balance and earning more money in order to showcase their status in society. However, insomnia can be reduced if diplomats can enforce rules in favor of employees and if people indulge in the activities that help them get revitalized.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as stress from work-life imbalance and the suggestion of exercise and government intervention. However, the development is somewhat limited. While you mention that lack of sleep causes insomnia, you do not fully explore the broader consequences (e.g., health issues, cognitive decline, or productivity loss). The solutions are clear, but the suggestion regarding 'diplomats' is slightly off-topic, as this term usually refers to international relations rather than government policy-makers. Overall, the response is well-structured and covers the requirements adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Additionally', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the final paragraph ('diplomats') is confusing, as it does not clearly link back to the government mentioned earlier. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problems from the solutions, which helps the overall flow of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'rejuvenated', 'insomnia', and 'corporate workers' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'showcase of their power of money' and 'diplomats', which sound slightly unnatural in this context. While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, the precision is occasionally lacking. However, the vocabulary is adequate for the task, and the meaning is never obscured by these minor inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are some minor errors, such as 'The Times of New Zealand publishes a paper that shows' (should be 'published' or 'has published') and 'the rules should be enforced strictly' (which is correct but could be more concise). Punctuation is generally accurate. You have good control over basic grammar, and while complex structures are present, they are not always used with full flexibility. The errors present do not impede communication.
