Student answer (Band 7.5)
In recent years, a significant amount of people hav reported that they have difficulty getting adequate sleep. This essay will discuss the major problems caused by sleep deprivation and suggest practical measures to address them.
In this fast-paced world, a large number of people have difficulty getting proper sleep hours. This habit can result in lower productivity in students and adults at school or at work. This lack of sleep often manifests itself as a lack of motivation in human behaviour. Moreover, the chances of making more mistakes increase, which can make adults vulnerable in their workplaces. For instance, a driver of a company, if not well-rested, can fall asleep while driving on the road, which may lead to an accident. So, not only does lack of sleep negatively impact on humans and their productivity, but it can also become an indirect cause of financial loss for a business.
However, by adopting small healthy habits on a daily basis, one can gradually improve the sleep cycle. Scientific evidence says that a hormone named melatonin, which helps one fall asleep, is released in the human body after sunset, so sleeping early at night can be a crucial step to improving the sleep cycle. Another contributing factor that can help one get adequate sleep is not using screens three hours before going to bed. Additionally, caffeine intake can also interfere with the part of the brain that promotes sleep. So, avoiding it, especially late at night, can be an ultimate positive step.
In conclusion, in this modern era, a substantial number of people complain about not having sufficient sleep. On the one hand, lack of productivity and financial loss for a business can be the outcomes of it; the solutions can be the small steps that a person can take, such as avoiding caffeine and screens late at night and going to bed early at night.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by sleep deprivation and the potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. For instance, the discussion on productivity and workplace safety provides a clear consequence, while the suggestions regarding melatonin and screen usage offer practical, actionable solutions. The position is clear throughout, and the essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more depth in the examples, perhaps by elaborating on the long-term health implications beyond just productivity, which would further strengthen the development of ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is logical. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'For instance', 'However', and 'Additionally' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of the argument is easy to follow. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of cohesive devices, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. The structure supports the overall message effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for some precision. The student uses topic-specific terms such as 'sleep deprivation', 'productivity', 'melatonin', and 'caffeine intake' appropriately. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, and the meaning is always clear. While the range is adequate, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions to demonstrate greater flexibility. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, and the tone remains appropriately formal throughout the essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several error-free sentences, and the grammar is generally accurate. For example, the use of conditional structures and relative clauses is handled well. There are minor slips, such as 'a significant amount of people' (should be 'number of') and 'hav' (a minor spelling error). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede the reader's understanding. The punctuation is generally correct, and the control over complex sentence forms is sufficient to support the clear communication of ideas.
