Student answer (Band 7.0)
In recent times, many people complain that they encounter difficulties getting enough sleep. This can be linked to various factors like Urbanization, noise pollution, working into the night, always scrolling social media and of course some health related problems like insomnia.
Sleep deprivation can lead to a number of problems that can be detrimental to work and other day time activities. The issues associated with lack of sleep include low concentration and memory which can significantly affect work and productivity, another problem is feeling tired, sleepy, exhausted and sluggish. These can affect activities of daily living and also a driving hazard. For example, a research that was carried out on Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs) in Edo State in August 2025 revealed that most victims of RTAs that were either drunk or were extremely tired from sleep deprived and most of these accidents were catastrophic and led to loss of several lives and properties. Another problem associated with lack of sleep is the effect on health. Lack of sleep has been shown to weaken the immune system, worsen hypertension, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
The issue of lack of sleep is a social emergency that needs to be tackled with immediate effect. The Government and NGO's should set up Awareness Campaigns that will give in-depth information on the importance of sleep and the problems that can arise from lack of it. Standards should be put in place to mitigate the factors that may contribute to sleep deprivation like setting up strict noise reduction policies in residential areas. Then individuals should be educated on practices that promote good sleep like avoiding screentime hours before bedtime, dimming the lights in the bedroom, avoiding heavy food at dinner and having a warm shower to feel relaxed.
In conclusion, tackling sleep deprivation is going to be of immerse advantage to the community in the sense that It will boost the economy because people are more relaxed and have more energy to increase productivity, it will create a healthier population and may indirectly reduce the rate of accidents as in the case of Edo State where there was about 70% decline in RTAs.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by sleep deprivation and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and well-supported, particularly the inclusion of the specific example regarding Road Traffic Accidents in Edo State, which adds depth to the argument. The position is clear throughout, and the essay is well-structured to cover the requirements. To reach a higher band, the student could further elaborate on the 'why' behind certain solutions, such as explaining how specific noise reduction policies would be implemented, rather than just listing them.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a clear logical progression. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the problems and the solutions is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'For example', 'Another problem', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, some sentences are slightly repetitive in structure, and the use of punctuation (such as the capitalization of 'Urbanization' and 'NGO's') is occasionally inconsistent, which slightly affects the flow. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to a coherent response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'sleep deprivation', 'hypertension', 'cardiovascular disease', and 'catastrophic'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'immerse advantage' (should be 'immense') and 'sleep deprived' (should be 'sleep deprivation'). While the range is adequate to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated, idiomatic, or precise collocations that would characterize a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several error-free sentences, but there are also persistent minor errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('most victims... that were either drunk') and punctuation errors (e.g., 'NGO's' instead of 'NGOs', and unnecessary capitalization of 'Urbanization'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The control over complex structures is present but not entirely consistent.
