Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, a majority of the population is facing troubles managing their sleep schedule, exacerbating their health condition. The reasons for this are multifaceted and discussed below alongwith its solutions.

With the advent of technology and its prevalent use, people spend significant amount of their time scrolling incessantly on social media platforms, putting strain on their eyes. Similarly, excessive use of internet could lead to overthinking as the younger generation might start comparing their lifestyle with social media influencers. Consequently, their sleep is hindered, leading to reduced attention span and concentration in their daily chores.

In addition to excessive cellphone usage, stressful work environment for employed professionals and academic pressure on children can cause difficulties with sleep. These conditions can cause insomnia in individuals, worsening their health problems. For instance, I have seen people struggle with loss of apetite and breathing troubles because they had insufficient sleep.

There a number of solutions to alleviate the issue of sleep deprevation. People should start limiting their mobile phone and laptop usage, allowing their body to relax. Moreover, engaging in various physical pursuits and meditation could prove to be beneficial in lowering the stress caused by work or studies. Studies have shown that people who work out regularly, often sleep better as compared to those who have a sedantary lifestyle.

To conclude, disrupted sleep cycle can cause numerous health problems and result in reduced concentration among individuals, if not managed properly. Nevertheless, people can always try taking up various activities that keep them physically or mentally engaged.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the consequences of sleep deprivation and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact of social media on mental health and the benefits of physical exercise. However, the development is somewhat brief. While the points are clear, they could be extended with more detailed explanations or specific examples to reach a higher band. For instance, the mention of 'breathing troubles' as a consequence of sleep loss is a bit vague and could be better explained. Overall, the response covers all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'consequently', 'in addition to', and 'nevertheless' are used appropriately to link sentences and ideas. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the problems from the solutions. The flow is smooth, and the reader is guided through the argument without confusion, meeting the criteria for a well-structured response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. You demonstrate the ability to use topic-specific terms like 'sleep deprivation', 'sedentary lifestyle', and 'insomnia'. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'apetite' (appetite) and 'deprevation' (deprivation), and 'sedantary' (sedentary). While these do not impede communication, they prevent the score from being higher. To improve, focus on accuracy in spelling and try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions to demonstrate a wider range of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound, though there are occasional slips, such as 'There a number of solutions' (missing 'are') and 'alongwith' (should be two words). The punctuation is generally correct, and the grammatical errors present are non-systematic and do not cause difficulty for the reader. To reach a higher band, aim for more varied complex sentence structures and ensure consistent subject-verb agreement throughout the text.
