Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact on professional life and the role of social media. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The discussion on problems is clearer than the solutions, which remain a bit generic. While the position is consistent, some points, such as the mention of Canada, are introduced but not fully integrated into a cohesive argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is supported by more detailed explanation or logical consequences rather than just listing them.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Consequently', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the referencing is occasionally slightly awkward, such as in the sentence 'To address this major concern of the insomnia'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the causes from the solutions, which helps the reader follow the argument. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts at less common collocations like 'interrupted sleep cycles' and 'adversely affect'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'an individual caught by the social media' instead of 'an individual is caught up in social media' and 'drops the deep sleep cycle'. The range is sufficient to discuss the topic, but more precise and varied vocabulary would be needed to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'severe mentally and physical problems' (should be 'mental and physical'), 'humans life' (should be 'human life'), and 'despite of' (should be 'despite'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement, such as 'involving in physical activities... can be the best solution'. These errors are noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would improve the score.
