Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact of blue light on sleep and the role of nutrition. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the mention of 'indigestion' and 'lack of vitamins' is a good start, but could be expanded with more specific consequences on daily life or health. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments lack depth and specific examples, relying on general statements rather than well-developed illustrations. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully explored with clear, logical reasoning.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a clear progression of ideas from the causes of sleep deprivation to the proposed solutions. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Consequently', 'Another is', and 'To tackle these problems', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the vague reference to a 'renowned doctor' without context. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the internal flow within paragraphs could be smoother to improve the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'contemporary era', 'deprivation', and 'nourishments'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'help a body by consuming' and 'the diverts all the unnecessary thoughts'. Additionally, 'night-sleep' is not a standard collocation. While the range is sufficient to communicate the main points, the lack of precision in word choice prevents the response from reaching a higher band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the flow. Examples include 'a number of doctors stated that a population who watch... most likely to have trouble', which lacks a main verb, and 'the diverts all the unnecessary thoughts', which is grammatically incorrect. There are also issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement throughout the text. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to suggest a limited control over complex structures.
