IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays many people complain that they have difficulties getting enough sleep. What problems can lack of sleep cause? What can be done about lack of sleep?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Human body needs proper sleep, normally 8 hours, to function at its best. However, not getting enough sleep is a common problem these days and it leads to various health and mood related issues.
First of all, lack of sleep can affect the muscles of the whole body, making the person feel more fatigued. Since a healthy mind requires a healthy body, thus the deficieny of sleep would affect concentration and task accomplishment. Eventually, the failure would lead to frustration, anger and other mood related problems.
A pleasant mood is important to carry out the daily activities and it cannot be achieved without getting adequate sleep. Even research has proven that those students tend to focus and perform better in exams who have a healthy sleep schedule. Less sleep can also lead to early aging, wrinkles and other skin related issues.
Every problem comes with a solution and there are a lot of things that can be done to get enough sleep. First of all, a time should be set aside solely for sleep and screen should be avoided during that time. Sometimes people have trouble going to sleep due to intrusive thoughts and this can be managed by practicing mindfulness or relaxation techniques before going to bed. External reminders like dim lights, or an early dinner should be given to the body to indicate that its the time to get rest.
To summarise, in order to achieve optimal level of performance during the day, sufficient sleep is non-negotiable. Hence, it is important to prioritise sleep over the tasks that can be done the next day because health should never be compromised.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and the potential solutions. Your ideas are relevant and logically presented. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention that lack of sleep affects muscles and concentration, these points could be extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The position is clear throughout, and the response maintains a consistent focus on the topic. To improve, aim to expand your supporting arguments with more depth rather than listing several points in quick succession.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use transition signals such as 'First of all', 'Even', and 'To summarise' to guide the reader. However, some of the cohesive links are a bit mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Since a healthy mind requires a healthy body, thus the deficieny of sleep...'. The use of 'thus' after 'Since' is redundant. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the problems to the solutions. Improving the variety and natural flow of your linking words would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fatigued', 'deficiency', 'intrusive thoughts', and 'non-negotiable'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'screen should be avoided' (should be plural 'screens') and 'it's the time to get rest' (should be 'it is time to rest'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Incorporating more precise collocations and a wider range of academic vocabulary would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'Human body needs' (missing an article: 'The human body'), 'deficieny' (spelling error), and 'its the time' (should be 'it is' or 'it's'). Additionally, the sentence 'Even research has proven that those students tend to focus and perform better in exams who have a healthy sleep schedule' is slightly awkward in its word order. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences and ensuring consistent control over articles and punctuation will help you achieve a higher band.
