IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays many people complain that they have difficulties getting enough sleep. What problems can lack of sleep cause? What can be done about lack of sleep?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In the era of modernization and globalization, many individuals are struggling with their sleep due to numerous factors. The concerns regarding the same have increased rapidly. There are various personal and professional reasons which make them struggle to sleep better. However, only identifying the root cause can help them look for alternate solutions.
Overthinking is the major concern. Not meeting society's expectations, they often start doubting themselves and comparing with friends, peers and family members. Among youth, an uneven sleep cycle is the main issue. Moreover, the cons associated with professional life, such as intensive workload, excessive stress to meet deadlines and performance pressure. For instance, the stereotype where an individual has to have their life figured by certain age keeps people under silent pressure, which often lead to depression.
There are small but highly effective solutions to recover from this. Firstly, one should try to take their journey as an independent one, not as a comparison. They should ignore the things which are beyond their control, such as other's opinions and criticism. In addition, working strictly on time management skills, with keeping health right next to work-life really helps. Having a weekly calendar generated ahead of time would give them relief from last minute surprises. Lastly, no phones on bed, 30 minutes before sleeping has been proven scientifically an effective method to challenge problems to rest.
To conclude, I believe this has became one of the major health concern, globally. Everyone has their own journey and that's why, respective reasons are attached behind it. Instead of just following universal remedies and taking suggestions from others, people should identify the root cause first and work on that specific matter to get efficient result.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While you identify overthinking and professional stress as causes, the specific health consequences are only briefly mentioned (e.g., 'which often lead to depression'). The solutions are practical, such as time management and limiting phone use, but could be expanded with more detailed explanation or examples to fully meet the requirements of a Band 7 or higher. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of analysis remains somewhat superficial in places.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover,' 'Firstly,' and 'In addition' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences is a bit disjointed, such as the transition between the causes of stress and the solutions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main ideas, which helps the overall readability of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'modernization,' 'globalization,' and 'intensive workload.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'challenge problems to rest' and 'respective reasons are attached behind it,' which sound unnatural. While you attempt to use more sophisticated language, the control is not consistent enough for a higher band. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but lacks the precision and flexibility required for a Band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'this has became' (should be 'become'), 'comparing with friends' (missing object), and 'no phones on bed' (should be 'in bed'). Additionally, some sentences are slightly fragmented or lack proper subject-verb agreement. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the response from reaching a higher band. A greater focus on proofreading for basic tense and preposition errors would be beneficial.
