Student answer (Band 6.5)

A group of people is disappointed with their short sleep patterns as it is becoming a concerning situation for them. It could cause several physical and mental issues that can adversely impact daily life activities. However, implementing different measures will improve the quality and duration of sleep, which I will discuss in the following paragraphs.

One of the major problems with a disturbed sleep schedule is concentration. Uncertainty in sleep patterns could make people tired throughout the day which may impact focus on work or study. Thus, it would reduce productivity and growth as the chance of making mistakes would increase. For example, a person staying awake late in the night may not be mentally prepared for the following day's tasks and may feel lethargic, which can impact their important tasks. Additionally, long-term sleep deprivation causes physical problems such as weakening the immune system, body pain and other health-related issues like obesity and heart problems.

This approach could be cured by following a strict bedtime routine. One should adopt the habit of sleeping at approximately the same time every day. Also, people should avoid using social media devices before going to bed as it distracts them from being punctual. The harsh light and rays coming from the phone make it harder to sleep as it irritates the eyes. Furthermore, a healthy diet can also improve sleep. People should avoid caffeine intake in the evening. Making a comfortable bed and a noise-free environment reduces distractions when sleeping.

Overall, in this fast-paced life, adopting a good sleeping pattern is difficult and causes a negative impact on concentration and overall well-being. However, healthy habits such as reducing caffeine intake and a balanced diet can increase sleep duration and enhance the quality of human health.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the consequences of sleep deprivation and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and logically grouped. The introduction clearly outlines the scope of the essay. The body paragraphs provide specific examples, such as the impact of social media and caffeine on sleep quality. However, some points could be developed further; for instance, the discussion on physical health could be expanded with more specific medical consequences beyond just mentioning obesity or heart problems. Overall, the response is well-structured and covers all requirements of the task effectively, maintaining a clear position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the problem-focused paragraph and the solution-focused paragraph is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'Thus', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore' are used appropriately to link sentences. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more varied to improve the overall sophistication of the text. Nevertheless, the structure is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'sleep deprivation', 'lethargic', and 'fast-paced life'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing. Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'This approach could be cured', where 'problem' would be a better fit than 'approach'. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score. Expanding the range of synonyms and idiomatic expressions would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over grammar, and errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. For example, the use of conditional structures ('if' clauses or 'may' for possibility) is handled well. There are minor issues with article usage and word choice, such as 'A group of people is disappointed with their short sleep patterns', which sounds slightly unnatural. However, the majority of sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly to support the clarity of the arguments. The grammatical control is solid for this level.
