Student answer (Band 8.0)
Inadequate sleep has become a modern day problem owning to hectic and longer work schedules and digital distractions which is concerning as it leads to physical and mental health problems, This essay will examine the severe health and productivity problems stemming from sleep deprivation and propose actionable solutions, including sleep hygiene and workplace regulations.
Problems caused by lack of sleep
A chronic deficit of sleep severely impairs both physical health and cognitive function. On an individual level, sleep-deprived people experience a drastic drop in concentration, memory retention, and decision-making capabilities. For example, a student who stays up all night studying often performs worse on an exam due to brain fatigue than one who is well-rested. Sufficient sleep is necessary for both the brain and the body to function adequately as long term sleep deprivation weakens the immune system, leaving individuals highly vulnerable to chronic conditions such as obesity, heart disease, and severe mental health disorders like depression.
Solutions to Address sleep deprivation
To combat the problem of sleep inefficiency a combination of personal discipline and societal adjustments is required. First, individuals must practice strict sleep hygiene. This includes establishing a consistent sleep schedule and creating a screen-free environment at least one hour before bed. The blue light emitted by smartphones suppresses melatonin production, making it difficult to fall asleep By replacing scrolling with reading a physical book, individuals can drastically improve their sleep quality. Second, employers and institutional bodies must intervene by implementing healthier schedules. Companies can introduce flexible start times or ban late-night work emails to ensure employees have adequate time to unwind.
In conclusion, a lack of sleep results in poor personal health, reduced productivity, and increased public safety hazards. However, by enforcing personal digital boundaries and restructuring demanding work cultures, society can effectively mitigate these risks and restore healthy sleep patterns.
