Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The essay addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, such as the impact on work performance and health, and the suggestion of exercise and limiting screen time. However, the development of these points is somewhat basic. For instance, the link between sleep and accidents is mentioned but could be expanded with more depth. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with more detailed explanations or specific examples rather than just listing them. Overall, the response is clear and directly answers the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. The use of cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Lastly', and 'In a nutshell' helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the health issues and the driver example is a bit abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the central topic of each paragraph is clear, which provides a coherent structure throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some good collocations like 'part and parcel' and 'busy schedule'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'distraction of sleep' instead of 'sleep disruption' and 'beauty sleep' which is slightly informal for this context. The range is sufficient to communicate the message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band. Improving the variety of synonyms and refining collocations would enhance the lexical quality.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and verb tenses (e.g., 'Lack of sleep cause' instead of 'causes', 'he didnot take' instead of 'he does not take', and 'if a person spend' instead of 'spends'). These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading for basic tense consistency and subject-verb agreement, as these errors occur throughout the text and prevent a higher score.
