Student answer (Band 6.0)

More and more people these days are complaining about having difficulty in sleeping. I believe it is majority due to growth in technology. It can cause numerous effects on your overall health. people should limit the use of technology and be physical active to get enough sleep. I intent to give reason for my arguments in the following paragraphs.

Sleep is vital for one's survival and hence people should focus on getting enough sleep. Sleep deprive people lack focus and concentration. Moreover, it also causes various illness like heart attack, high blood pressure etc. Additionally, it can significantly impact a person's behaviour which in-turn reduces productivity. For example, people who sleep more hours and get enough sleeps are able to perform better than those who are facing difficulties in getting enough sleep.

Growth in technology is the foremost reason and hence people should focus on reducing the use of technology. Additionally, you should focus on ways to be physically active by indulging in sports or regular exercise. This will make your body feel tired and due to which will help you sleep better. For Instance, In earlier days people were getting enough sleep as they were always outside performing some form of outdoor activity like playing sports or just walking with friend or family.

To conclude, getting enough sleep is important for your health and overall wellbeing. you should focus more on doing physical activities rather than using electronic devices that affect your sleep and reduces your focus and concentration.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the consequences of sleep deprivation and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as mentioning health issues like heart disease and the role of technology. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the link between technology and sleep is mentioned but not deeply explored, and the solutions are quite general. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or elaborate on the 'why' and 'how' behind your arguments. The position is clear, but the overall depth of the response remains at a functional level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'To conclude' to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive. The transition between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother to improve the flow of your argument. Referencing is generally clear, but there are instances where the connection between ideas feels slightly disjointed, such as the sudden shift to the historical comparison in the third paragraph. Improving the variety of your linking words would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You use some basic terms repeatedly, such as 'focus' and 'enough sleep'. There are also some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'majority due to' (should be 'mainly due to') and 'sleep deprive people' (should be 'sleep-deprived people'). While the meaning is always clear, the lack of more sophisticated or varied vocabulary limits the score. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations related to health and lifestyle.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'be physical active' (should be 'be physically active'), 'I intent to' (should be 'I intend to'), and 'due to which will help you' (which is grammatically redundant). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some missing commas and inconsistent capitalization at the start of sentences. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and adverb usage will help improve your accuracy.
