Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying both the consequences of sleep deprivation and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as mentioning health issues like depression and the role of diet and exercise. However, the development of these points is somewhat superficial. For instance, the link between sleep and work output is mentioned but could be expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The position is clear throughout, and the essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic, though the supporting arguments would benefit from more depth and elaboration to fully satisfy the requirements of a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'First and foremost', 'Apart from this', and 'Moreover', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the health benefits of sleep and the impact on work could be more fluid. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the problems to the solutions, which ensures the essay remains coherent throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at using less common vocabulary, such as 'hectic schedules' and 'prone to'. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'heath' instead of 'health', 'devert' instead of 'divert', and 'prefer to junk food' instead of 'prefer junk food'. These errors are noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on accurate spelling and more precise collocations to convey their message with greater sophistication and fewer slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and prepositions, such as 'This can helps them' and 'work on to improve'. Additionally, there are issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement, for example, 'people who are not able to have good sleep they are prone'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency and accuracy of the writing. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical consistency is recommended.
