Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which limits the depth of development. While the ideas are relevant, they are presented in a somewhat superficial manner. For example, the link between 'peer pressure' and 'sleep deprivation' is mentioned but not fully explained or supported with detailed reasoning. To achieve a higher band, you must expand your arguments with more specific examples and ensure you meet the word count to allow for a more comprehensive exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. There is an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions between sentences could be smoother to improve the flow. For instance, the jump between discussing technology and peer pressure is abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, and the overall structure would benefit from more sophisticated linking words to connect ideas more effectively across the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on some repetitive phrasing, such as 'major role' and 'major addiction'. There are also some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'inflate the chances of health problems' (which sounds unnatural; 'increase the risk' would be better) and 'combat with sleep disturbances' (the verb 'combat' does not require 'with'). To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and avoid repeating basic adjectives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'cellphones plays' (should be 'play') and 'Studies shows' (should be 'show'). There are also missing articles, such as 'in further paragraphs' (should be 'in the further paragraphs') and 'importance of the sleep' (should be 'importance of sleep'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage will lead to immediate improvement.
