Student answer (Band 6.0)
A significant number of people are experiencing sleeplessness these days. This problem can either impact productivity or lead to a sedentary lifestyle. Several measures are needed to fix this issue, such as time management and adopting healthy habits.
One of the primary problems caused by lack of sleep is that it disrupts the work-life balance. A sleep-deprived person cannot focus on their work properly, which leads to poor outcomes. This, in turn, affects daily life if not taken seriously. The other disadvantage is that it can make life feel purposeless. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which prevents a full development of ideas. While the points regarding work-life balance and time management are relevant, they remain somewhat superficial. The conclusion is incomplete, cutting off mid-sentence, which further impacts the task completion. To improve, you must expand on your arguments with more detailed examples and ensure the essay meets the required length to allow for a comprehensive discussion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and an attempt at a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the primary problems', 'The other disadvantage', and 'However' are used to guide the reader. However, the abrupt ending of the essay disrupts the overall flow and coherence. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, but the lack of a fully developed conclusion makes the progression feel incomplete. Improving the transition between ideas and ensuring all sections are fully written will enhance the overall structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'sedentary lifestyle', 'insomnia', and 'doomscrolling' effectively. There is some attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some phrasing is slightly repetitive. The word choice is generally accurate and does not impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and vary your word choices to avoid repeating terms like 'task' or 'problems' too frequently. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically sound, and errors are infrequent and do not cause confusion. For example, 'The more a person does not prioritize their sleep schedule, the less motivation they will have' is a well-constructed complex sentence. However, the range of structures is somewhat limited. To improve, aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, and ensure that all sentences are completed correctly, especially in the conclusion.
