Student answer (Band 6.0)

Sleep plays a crucial role in a healthy lifestyle. In recent times, several people experience difficulties to get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation is due to overuse of mobile phones and social media, but this problem can be tackle with help of time management.

On the one hand, the primary reason for not getting enough sleep is that people use mobile phones late night, and it adversely affects their mental well-being, and their brain is suffer. Additionally, they use different kinds of social media platforms, and they use them without thinking of time. Therefore, their sleep patterns get distributed. Noise pollution is another reason for lack of sleep. To give an example, noise of vehicles and machines from factories are responsible for noise pollution. Due to noise, people are struggling to sleep effectively, and they are unable to perform perfectly at their workplace, home, and schools.

Despite having the difficulties getting enough sleep, there are some solutions available to handle this problem. Individuals need to manage their screen- time properly because overuse of cell phones consumes their most of time. However, time management help them to complete all the tasks on time, and they do not spend their time in front of screens. After proper time management, they may get enough time for sleep. Government should introduce public transport, so people avoid the usage of private vehicle. Thus, noise pollution can be decreased. Plus, government should implement rules and regulation to control the noise pollution, and everyone should follow them. Consequently, when the noise level is reduced, people will not face issue to get proper sleep.

In conclusion, lack of sleep has a negative affect on mental health, and people can suffer from chronic diseases, but time management and government help to tackle this problem. Although people suffer sleep deprivation, screen-time management is beneficial to get adequate sleep.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, covering mental well-being and productivity as consequences, and time management and government intervention as solutions. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the link between noise pollution and workplace performance is mentioned but not fully explored. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of analysis could be improved by providing more specific examples or elaborating on the consequences of chronic sleep deprivation beyond general health issues. Overall, it meets the requirements of the task sufficiently.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a progression of ideas from the causes of sleep deprivation to the solutions. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Additionally', 'Therefore', and 'In conclusion' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are instances where referencing is a bit repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure allows the reader to follow the argument without difficulty, although the flow could be smoother with more varied cohesive links.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'sleep deprivation', 'mental well-being', and 'chronic diseases'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'their brain is suffer' (should be 'their brain suffers') and 'negative affect' (should be 'negative effect'). The range is sufficient for the task, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. The repetition of basic phrases like 'use mobile phones' and 'get enough sleep' also limits the lexical variety.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'difficulties to get' (should be 'difficulties getting'), 'tackle with help of' (should be 'tackled with the help of'), and 'noise of vehicles... are responsible' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in article usage and verb forms. The writer demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but these are often where the errors occur. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
