Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, many people struggle to get enough sleep because of busy lifestyles, work pressure and excessive use of electronic devices. Although sleep is essential for both physical and mental health, it is often neglected. Lack of sleep can cause several problems, but there are practical ways to address this issue.
One major consequence of insufficient sleep is reduced concentration and productivity. People who do not sleep well may find it difficult to focus on their work or studies and more likely to make mistakes. For example, a student who stays up late studying may remember less information the following day and perform poorly in an examination. Lack of sleep can also affect people's moods and making them more irritable, anxious and stressed. In the long term, consistently poor sleep can negatively impact physical health and increase the risk of various health problem.
There are several measures that can be taken to improve sleep. First people should develop a regular sleep schedule by going to bead and waking up at similar times every day. They should also reduce their screen time such as using their smartphone, computers and other electronic devices before bedtime, as these activities can make it harder to relax. In addition, avoid caffeine late in the evenings and getting regular exercise can help people sleep more sound. Employers and schools could also help by promoting healthier schedules and discouraging excessive workloads.
In conclusion, insufficient sleep can harm concentration, emotional well-being and physical health. However, maintaining a regular routine, reducing screen time before bed and adopting healthier lifestyle can significantly improve sleep quality. Therefore, both individuals and organizations should take this issue seriously and work towards healthier sleeping habits.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying both the consequences of sleep deprivation (reduced concentration, mood swings, physical health risks) and potential solutions (regular schedules, reduced screen time, lifestyle changes). The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. The position is consistent throughout, and the essay is well-structured to cover both questions. To reach a higher band, the development of ideas could be more nuanced; for example, the impact on 'physical health' is mentioned but could be expanded with more specific examples or a deeper explanation of the physiological mechanisms involved to demonstrate a more thorough exploration of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'One major consequence,' 'For example,' 'In addition,' and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of cohesive devices, and the referencing is clear throughout the text, contributing to a coherent and well-structured response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and generally appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'insufficient sleep,' 'emotional well-being,' and 'productivity.' There are a few minor errors in word choice or form, such as 'health problem' (should be plural 'health problems') and 'sleep more sound' (should be 'sleep more soundly'). While the range is adequate, the essay would benefit from a more sophisticated selection of collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a higher level of precision and flexibility in language use.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several error-free sentences, and the grammar is generally accurate. However, there are some persistent minor errors, such as 'making them more irritable' (should be 'and makes them' or 'making them'), 'going to bead' (spelling error: 'bed'), and 'adopting healthier lifestyle' (should be 'a healthier lifestyle'). These errors are non-systematic and do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from reaching the highest band, which requires a wider range of error-free complex structures.
