Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the essay touches upon the causes of sleep deprivation (technology and social media) and suggests a solution (balanced schedule), the ideas are underdeveloped and lack depth. The response is too brief to fully explore the consequences of sleep deprivation, such as cognitive impairment or long-term health risks. The lack of sufficient supporting examples or detailed explanations means the task is only partially addressed. To improve, you must expand on your arguments with specific examples and ensure you meet the minimum length requirement to allow for a full discussion of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a clear structure. There is no introduction or conclusion, and the paragraphing is ineffective, with several very short, fragmented sentences that do not flow logically. The use of cohesive devices is minimal and often mechanical or misused, such as the repetitive use of 'that' or 'and'. The progression of ideas is difficult to follow because the sentences are often disconnected. To improve, you should use clear paragraph breaks for each main idea (causes and solutions) and employ a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in addition') to connect your sentences and ideas more smoothly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive, often relying on basic or inaccurate phrasing. For example, 'making their financial status up to date' is an unnatural collocation, and 'peoples' is used incorrectly as a plural of 'people'. There is little attempt to use less common or academic vocabulary. Many phrases are vague, such as 'it cost them a lot', which does not clearly convey the specific negative impacts of sleep deprivation. To improve, focus on learning topic-specific collocations related to health and technology, and avoid repeating the same words in close proximity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'peoples are looking'), incorrect word forms (e.g., 'lack of sleeping' instead of 'lack of sleep'), and sentence fragments that lack a main verb or clear subject. The range of structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences with some awkward attempts at complex ones. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing commas and periods. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and proofreading for common errors like pluralization and verb tense consistency.
