Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary world sleep deficiency has become a huge challenge for a large number of people. This can lead to detrimental effects on physical and mental health, various people suffer from this issue. The lack of sleep can overcome with mind refreshment exercises and by reducing the screen time.

One of the major problems that can take place owing to sleep deprivation is the negative affect on body and mind. Physical impact includes dark circles near eyes, weakened body and lesser strength. This is because a considerate sleep is an integral activity for a human body in which body heals itself. Also, low stamina does not allow one to perform adventurous sports activities such as rock climbing, rafting and hiking. Additionally, mental tiredness leads to lack of concentration owing to requirement of sleep for body. Indeed, after taking a nap of particularly eight hours and may be a little more if the body needs mind comes into the peaceful stage. For example, hectic routine of people do not let their brain to relax and calm down. Consequently, sleep becomes necessary for everyone to stay active , alert and enable the focus for daily life chores.

However, there are several factors that really affects sleep schedule of a person and some measures can be taken to get rid of this issue. Firstly, screen time should be reduced if not mandatory. For example, a study by an Oxford University says that several people suffer sleep deprivation due to more usage of mobile phone and laptop before going in bed. This is because screen light releases a kind of radiations that does not let the human brain sleep. Secondly, if night time a person is unable to manage longer sleep than, they should take a nap in morning in middle of their routine.

In conclusion, although some people are unable to take proper sleep , still one can adopt some measures to overcome this issue. Few changes can bring a positive outcome and help people not to face issues happening to them due to lack of sleep.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact on physical health and the role of screen time. However, the development is somewhat inconsistent. While the physical impacts are mentioned, the explanation of mental consequences is slightly repetitive and lacks depth. The solutions provided are practical, but the suggestion to take a nap in the middle of a routine is not fully explored in terms of its feasibility for everyone. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is supported by more specific, logical reasoning rather than general statements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the transition 'Indeed, after taking a nap of particularly eight hours'. Additionally, some referencing is unclear, such as the phrase 'this issue' appearing without a strong link to the preceding sentence. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to create a more natural, sophisticated connection between ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'detrimental effects' and 'sleep deprivation'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'considerate sleep' (instead of 'adequate' or 'sufficient' sleep) and 'negative affect' (should be 'effect'). Furthermore, the phrase 'requirement of sleep for body' is somewhat unnatural. To improve, focus on learning collocations—words that naturally go together—and ensure that word forms (noun vs. verb) are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'The lack of sleep can overcome' (should be passive: 'can be overcome'), 'hectic routine of people do not let' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'if night time a person is unable to manage longer sleep than' (awkward phrasing and unnecessary 'than'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas. To improve, focus on mastering passive voice constructions and subject-verb agreement, and proofread carefully to eliminate minor slips in sentence structure.
