Student answer (Band 7.0)
Insomnia is a growing problem among people globally and it leads to other numerous diseases like diabetes, obesity, digestive issues, and many more among the young generation. To curb the issue, working on the root cause like stress management, sleep habits, and reducing the use of technology can help in sleep deprivation.
It has been noted widely that sleeplessness is becoming a major concern among the youth and the adults. It is advisable to rest for 7-8 hours a day, however, often people struggle to get sufficient rest, which leads to medical complications like elevated blood sugar, unmanaged weight gain, indigestion, and many more. Hence, an unmanaged sleep cycle can lead to various life threatening issues. Insufficient sleep also leads to low concentration and poor decision making skills. For example, a sleep deprived employee can function less effectively compared to others, consequently, contribute less to the daily needs of the firm, and may get laid off eventually,
To resolve this matter, healthy and strict daily routine should be followed by young individuals over a period of time. Physical fitness activities like yoga and meditation should be practised to manage the stress effectively and regain normal sleep cycle. Also, practising healthy sleep habits like avoiding intake of high sodium and potassium rich meals before the bedtime can reduce metabolism rates, which allows the human body to rest. Finally, lowering the screen time or limiting the use of phone before bed benefits to sound sleeping substantially, as it facilitates thought and nerve regulation.
To conclude, sleeplessness can be combatted by following a structured routine, healthy habits, and limiting cell phone usage to live longer and happier.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. You have identified specific consequences such as health issues (diabetes, obesity) and professional impacts (poor decision-making, job loss). The solutions provided, including stress management and lifestyle adjustments, are logical and well-supported. To reach a higher band, ensure that your examples are slightly more detailed; for instance, the example of the employee is good, but could be expanded to show a more direct link between sleep deprivation and specific workplace outcomes. Overall, the response is well-focused and covers all requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'consequently,' 'to resolve this matter,' and 'to conclude' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using more varied referencing. For example, in the second paragraph, the transition between medical complications and professional performance could be smoother. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the progression of ideas is clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Terms like 'sleep deprivation,' 'medical complications,' and 'nerve regulation' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'can help in sleep deprivation,' which is slightly awkward; 'can help alleviate sleep deprivation' would be more natural. Additionally, 'benefits to sound sleeping' is not a standard collocation. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is varied enough to convey your meaning clearly and appropriately for the task. You show a good awareness of topic-specific terminology.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You demonstrate control over basic grammar, and your meaning is always clear. There are some minor errors, such as 'healthy and strict daily routine should be followed' (missing an article: 'a healthy...') and 'benefits to sound sleeping' (incorrect preposition usage). While you attempt complex structures, some are slightly clunky. However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on article usage and refining your use of prepositions to ensure your complex sentences are as accurate as your simple ones.
