Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is an undeniable fact that sleep plays a paramount role in cognitive functions of a body. While sleeping, a body is in its recovery phase. In recent times, majority of people are complaining for not having a sound sleep in enough proportion. Lack of sleep can cause several issues like being unfocused, weak memory and many problems related to the brain. However, this can be solved by taking some precautions. In the paragraphs below, I would like to put forth my views with a valid opinion in the conclusion.

To begin with, maintaining a good quality of sleep with enough time is very essential to have a good health. Many people around us are being affected by the lack of sleep. For instance, the students are unable to perform well in their academics, whereas the adults are unfocused towards their goals. Moreover, it also affects on the mood of people; we often see people getting annoyed or frustrated without any reason. Additionally, scientists have also proven that 70% of our daily problems are the result of not sleeping enough.

However, we seldom give a thought to ponder over the solutions. Many researchers have proved that avoiding the blue lights at least 2 hours before sleeping can result in better quality of sleep. It is mainly because blue light damages the eye nerves that is linked to the brain. Furthermore, practicing meditation is the easiest solution as it calms human brain and helps to regulate the sleeping schedule. Most importantly, having a fixed schedule for sleep solves 80% of sleeping problems; as everyday on same time, the brain gets signal to sleep. Later on, this also resolves the hormonal issues, that is very common among youngsters nowadays.

The seemingly inexorable debate about getting enough sleep can keep on going. Nevertheless, showing deep reverence for all aspects and observing a finer nuance of the matter mentioned above, I espouse the notion of supporting the fact that difficulties getting enough sleep could be solved by making some basic and minor changes to our everyday routine. It is not an incurable disease, but if we avoid sleeping enough, then it can cause some severe health problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying both the problems associated with sleep deprivation and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. For instance, the discussion on blue light and meditation provides concrete, practical solutions. However, the development is slightly uneven; while the solutions are well-explained, the section on problems could be more deeply explored beyond general statements like 'unfocused' or 'weak memory'. The position is clear throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the writer's stance. To reach a higher band, ensure that the consequences of sleep deprivation are elaborated with more specific examples or logical chains of reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the impact of sleep deprivation to actionable solutions. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to link ideas. However, there are minor issues with referencing and flow; for example, the phrase 'the body' in the first paragraph is slightly repetitive, and some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes, which helps the reader follow the argument without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The writer uses some sophisticated collocations and academic phrasing, such as 'paramount role', 'cognitive functions', and 'seemingly inexorable debate'. However, there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'complaining for not having' (should be 'complaining about') and 'affects on the mood' (should be 'affects the mood'). While the range is adequate to convey meaning precisely, these minor errors prevent the response from reaching the higher band descriptors that require more consistent, natural control of less common lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using complex forms, such as conditional sentences and relative clauses. However, there are several grammatical slips, including 'majority of people are complaining' (needs 'the'), 'a body is in its recovery phase' (should be 'the body'), and 'everyday on same time' (should be 'every day at the same time'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication or cause confusion for the reader. To improve, the writer should focus on article usage and prepositional accuracy.
