Student answer (Band 7.0)

Many people nowadays suffer from insufficient sleep or struggle to maintain a regular sleep schedule. This can be caused by a variety of factors and may lead to numerous long-term health consequences.

On the one hand, individuals often work 9-to-5 jobs, participate in extracurricular activities, complete household chores, and engage in physical work, all of which can leave them exhausted by the end of the day. Due to stress, going to bed late and waking up early can become a routine, leading to mental exhaustion and fatigue.

On the other hand, many people rely on sleeping pills, which can potentially lead to serious health issues. There are several ways to maintain a healthy sleep cycle, such as meditation, yoga, going for walks, eating a balanced diet, and exercising regularly. For instance, my grandmother was having difficulty getting seven hours of sleep, even though she was not working all day. She tried taking afternoon naps, but nothing seemed to work. Later, we encouraged her to go for a 30-minute walk after dinner. Now, she sleeps much better and feels more energetic.

In my opinion, anything that provides an individual with peace of mind can contribute to better sleep. Moreover, sleep patterns vary among different age groups. Children often tend to fall asleep easily, whereas older adults may take 50–60 minutes to fall asleep. I would also blame smart technology, as excessive phone use and social media addiction can lead to sleepless nights, with people staying awake just to scroll through their feeds.

In conclusion, I would encourage people to ask those around them whether they are getting enough sleep and maintaining a healthy sleep cycle. Taking this small step can make a significant difference to their overall well-being.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of mental exhaustion and the use of lifestyle changes like exercise. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the personal example of the grandmother is effective, the discussion on the 'problems' caused by lack of sleep is quite brief and could have been expanded to include more specific consequences beyond general fatigue. The conclusion introduces new information about social media and age groups, which would have been better placed in the body paragraphs to ensure a more logical flow and deeper exploration of the main points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph has a central focus, and the transition between the problem and the solution is clear. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Moreover' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the progression of ideas within the final paragraph feels slightly disjointed, as it shifts from a conclusion to new points about technology and age groups. To improve, ensure that all main arguments are fully developed within the body paragraphs before moving to the concluding summary.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. You use terms like 'insufficient sleep,' 'mental exhaustion,' and 'well-being' accurately. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some phrases are quite standard. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations or topic-specific terminology related to health and sleep science. The current range is adequate to convey your meaning clearly without any significant errors in word choice or spelling that would impede the reader's understanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and punctuation is used correctly throughout. There are no major errors that cause confusion. To improve, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, to enhance the sophistication of your writing. For example, instead of 'I would also blame smart technology,' you could use 'Smart technology could also be identified as a primary culprit for sleep deprivation.' Overall, the control of grammar is solid.
