Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, many individuals have expressed concern about their inability to get sufficient sleep. This essay will examine the problems associated with sleep deprivation and suggest possible measures to address this issue.

Lack of adequate sleep can have several detrimental effects on an individual especially on their health and cognitive performance. People who think a lot find it challenging to sleep as it would interfere. For example, yesterday I had a problem to solve and there was no solution, I stayed up all night thinking about it which made my productivity the following morning low. In addition, physical well-being is of paramount importance because it directly influence an individual's quality of life. For instance, health conditions like Typhoid and malaria withhold rest and relaxation of the mind. Additionally, a considerable proportion of individuals express that lack of enough sleep leads to nutritional deficiency.

Solutions to this predicament are that there should be avoidance of caffeine late in the day as it will enable one to stay conscious at night To illustrate, students cosume caffeinated drinks in order to be active at night so they could read for an examination. Consequently, substances like methampheetamine which workers in Europe ingest in order for them to work for two days without sleeping, should be avoided and banned. Furthermore, sleeping schedules should be established for children as this will improve their learning abilities. Another significant factor is treating long-term health conditions.

In my view, sleeping habits should be made compulsory and inculcated in people. Instead of taking stimulants and other substances, there should be adequate rest before continuation of job.

In conclusion, sleep plays a vital function in the body and it helps in our daily routine.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the health impacts are mentioned, the explanation is sometimes tangential, such as the reference to 'Typhoid and malaria' which are diseases rather than direct consequences of sleep deprivation. The suggestion regarding 'methamphetamine' is somewhat extreme and lacks a clear logical link to general sleep hygiene. To improve, you should focus on more common, relatable consequences like mental fatigue or decreased immune function, and provide more practical, universally applicable solutions rather than focusing on illegal substances.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'In addition', 'For instance', and 'Consequently'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the logical progression within paragraphs is occasionally disrupted by abrupt shifts in topic. For example, the transition from discussing students' caffeine consumption to the banning of methamphetamine is jarring. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'detrimental effects', 'paramount importance', and 'predicament'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'withhold rest' (which is not the standard way to describe the impact of illness on sleep) and 'stay conscious' (where 'stay awake' would be more natural). Additionally, there is a spelling error ('cosume' instead of 'consume' and 'methampheetamine'). To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure spelling is accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally hinder clarity. For example, 'physical well-being is of paramount importance because it directly influence' contains a subject-verb agreement error ('influences'). Another example is 'Solutions to this predicament are that there should be avoidance of...', which is wordy and grammatically awkward. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and try to simplify complex sentences if you are unsure of the structure, ensuring that your punctuation is consistent throughout.
