Student answer (Band 6.5)

In modern times, there has been a surge in complaints by people regarding not getting enough sleep. This is often caused by demanding work load, irregular sleeping patterns and overuse of electronic devices. Although, sleep deprivation has multiple problems associated with it but there are some measures by which it can be resolved.

One of the most significant problems associated with lack of sleep is physical and mentally tired. It can be observed that people who usually get 5 hours or less sleep usually feel less active both mentally and physically. This can sometimes lead to their irritated behaviour towards everything. This can be a serious problems for workers as it will reduce their efficiency and can create a serious impact on their work relations. It can also lead to lack of concentration in the students, which can directly reflect them in their studies and can cause them score lower marks in the exams.

On the other hand, there are ways in which sleep deprivation can be cured. The most important of them is start sleeping early and waking up on approximately around the same time daily. It will help to rebuild your circadian rhythm. Moreover, minimize your caffeine intake later in the day and try using no electronic devices like mobile phones, computers or televisions close to your sleeping time. It is also recommended to train hard during the day so that you get tired during the day and then ultimately it gets easier for you to sleep in the night. For instance, a research showed that people who read books before sleeping instead of electronic devices have easier time sleeping.

In conclusion, sleep deprivation can bring problems like lack of concentration, unpleasant mood etc. but can be cured with fitness and sleep discipline.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by sleep deprivation and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the impact on work efficiency and the suggestion of maintaining a consistent sleep schedule. However, some points could be further extended; for instance, the mention of 'physical and mentally tired' is grammatically awkward and lacks depth. The position is clear throughout, and the essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic. To reach a higher band, ensure that all arguments are fully supported with more precise explanations rather than general statements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the most significant', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some referencing is imprecise, such as 'This can be a serious problems' where the pronoun 'this' refers back to a vague concept. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific terminology like 'circadian rhythm' and 'sleep deprivation'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'physical and mentally tired' (should be 'physical and mental fatigue') and 'can cause them score lower marks' (should be 'cause them to score'). While the range is sufficient, more precise and varied vocabulary would elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'This can be a serious problems' (subject-verb agreement), 'physical and mentally tired' (incorrect word form), and 'it gets easier for you to sleep in the night' (preposition error). The control over complex structures is inconsistent, and punctuation is generally functional but could be more precise. Improving the accuracy of basic grammatical structures should be a priority.
