Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the consequences of sleep deprivation and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact on mental health and workplace safety, and the suggestions regarding working hours and lifestyle changes are practical. However, the development is somewhat uneven. For instance, the link between parental sleep deprivation and children's violent behavior is a bit of a leap and lacks sufficient explanation. While the position is clear, some points could be expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. Overall, the response is well-focused on the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. The use of cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' helps guide the reader through the argument. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical or the referencing is a bit weak, such as the transition between the discussion of technology and the suggestion for meditation. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is generally clear, though the connection between sentences could be smoother in some areas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'workplace hazards', 'fatal injury', and 'mitigate'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'get influence by them' instead of 'be influenced by them' and 'taking stress' instead of 'experiencing stress'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles (e.g., 'the problem of not having enough sleep'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence fragments (e.g., 'While there are multiple factors that would help reducing the problems.'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some capitalization errors at the start of sentences. These errors are noticeable but rarely impede the reader's understanding of the main points.
