Student answer (Band 7.0)
It is irrefutable that problem of lack of sleep among individuals is becoming common these days. While this can lead to many problems such as increase in errors and health problems, this situation can be improved by changing sleeping habits and environment.
Although people face various difficulties due to insomnia, the major one is increased possibilities of mistakes and accidents. As lack of sleep results in tiredness, individuals cannot focus on work properly that ultimately deteriorates the quality of work. For example, if drivers do not sleep properly at night, they cannot pay complete attention while driving which rises the chances of road accidents. Moreover, due to getting less sleep, residents face several health concerns. Not only does it affect human's psychological health by increasing stress and anxiety, but also it leads to obesity. To exemplify, staying awake for longer hours makes people feel more hungry due to which they gain weight frequently. Therefore, lack of sleep disturbs person's professional and personal life both.
On the other hand, some possible courses of action could be taken to alleviate this phenomenon. The most effective solution would be changing in lifestyle. If people start fixing their sleep schedule, refrain from using electronic devices and avoid consuming caffine before bed time, these small habits will give more time for sleep. Instead, they should adopt healthy habits such as reading books as it can help some person to fall sleep early. Furthermore, changing the sleep environment could be helpful. For instance, changing lighting in room, playing soothing music and finding a peaceful and cozy spot to sleep would be more comfortable. Consequently, the problem of lack of sleep could be solved by trying different ways at home instead of becoming habitual of taking medicines.
In conclusion, even though numerous problems are created by this phenomenon such as reduced quality of tasks at home and workplaces and medical problems, people could start getting proper sleep if they substitute their current habits with some healthy habits.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying both the consequences of sleep deprivation (accidents, health issues) and potential solutions (lifestyle changes, environment). The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are well-supported with relevant examples, such as the impact on drivers and the link between sleep and weight gain. The development is logical and sufficient for the task requirements. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more nuanced analysis, perhaps discussing the societal or economic implications of sleep deprivation beyond individual health and safety, which would demonstrate a deeper engagement with the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'For instance', and 'On the other hand' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. However, there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the phrase 'changing in lifestyle' which is slightly awkward. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the argument. The use of cohesive devices is generally natural, though occasionally slightly mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'irrefutable', 'deteriorates', and 'alleviate this phenomenon' show an attempt to use more sophisticated language. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'becoming habitual of taking medicines' instead of 'becoming reliant on medication' and 'caffine' (spelling error). Despite these, the vocabulary is adequate for the task, and the meaning is always clear. To improve, the student should focus on more precise collocations and ensure spelling accuracy for common academic terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and complex structures like 'Not only does it affect... but also it leads to...' are used correctly. However, there are several small errors, such as missing articles ('problem of lack of sleep', 'changing in lifestyle') and minor phrasing issues ('help some person to fall sleep'). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring consistent article usage would help elevate the score.
