Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact on concentration and the suggestion to reduce screen time. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about employers is mentioned but not fully explored in terms of how it specifically improves sleep. The position is clear throughout, and the response maintains a consistent focus on the topic. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to provide more detailed explanations and perhaps a more nuanced exploration of the consequences beyond just accidents and health.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'All in all' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, the use of these devices is sometimes a bit mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the health impacts and the solutions could be more sophisticated. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the progression of ideas is clear.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'contemporary era' and 'vital functions'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and collocation issues, such as 'appose the sleep' (oppose/hinder) and 'effect' used instead of 'affect' multiple times. These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on using verbs and nouns more accurately and expanding their range of collocations related to health and lifestyle.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('energy drinks contains') and the misuse of 'effect' as a verb instead of 'affect'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some comma splices present, such as 'screen time can effect the brain cells which helps to achieve proper sleep.' While these errors do not prevent understanding, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy would help improve this score.
