Student answer (Band 7.5)

Nowadays, many people struggle to get enough sleep because of their busy lifestyles, work pressure, and excessive use of technology. Lack of sleep can cause several problems for both physical and mental health. However, there are some effective ways to improve sleep quality.

One major problem caused by insufficient sleep is tiredness during the day. People who do not sleep enough may have difficulty concentrating on their work or studies. As a result, their productivity can decrease and they may make more mistakes. Lack of sleep can also affect a person's mood. For example, someone who regularly sleeps only five or six hours may become easily irritated, stressed, or unable to manage their emotions properly. In the long term, poor sleeping habits may also increase the risk of health problems.

There are several ways to deal with this issue. First, people should follow a regular sleeping schedule by going to bed and waking up at similar times every day. They should also avoid using mobile phones, computers, and other electronic devices shortly before going to bed because these activities can make it harder to relax. In addition, reducing caffeine in the evening and doing regular exercise during the day can help people sleep better. For instance, a person who replaces late-night social media use with reading a book may find it easier to fall asleep.

In conclusion, lack of sleep can lead to tiredness, poor concentration, mood changes, and other health problems. To solve this issue, people should develop healthy sleeping habits, reduce screen time before bed, exercise regularly, and maintain a consistent sleep schedule.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying both the consequences of sleep deprivation and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. The essay is well-structured, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each prompt component, and a concise conclusion. To reach a higher band, the development of ideas could be more extensive. For instance, while you mention 'health problems' as a long-term consequence, providing a specific example like 'increased risk of cardiovascular disease' would demonstrate a deeper level of analysis and support, moving the response from a general overview to a more sophisticated discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical progression. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the problems and the solutions is smooth. You make effective use of cohesive devices such as 'As a result', 'In addition', and 'For instance' to link ideas. The paragraphing is logical and helps the reader follow your argument easily. To improve further, you could vary your cohesive devices slightly more to avoid repetitive structures, but overall, the flow of information is natural and the organisation is consistent throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly and precisely. Phrases like 'insufficient sleep', 'regular sleeping schedule', and 'manage their emotions properly' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is appropriate and functional, it lacks some of the 'less common' or idiomatic items that would push the score into the 8.0+ range. The word choice is consistently accurate, and there are no spelling errors. To improve, try incorporating more sophisticated collocations or topic-specific terminology related to health and sleep science.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is used correctly. You successfully use conditional-like structures and complex sentences, such as 'People who do not sleep enough may have difficulty concentrating...' and 'A person who replaces late-night social media use with reading a book may find it easier to fall asleep.' These demonstrate a solid grasp of grammar. There are no significant errors that impede communication, and the writing is consistently clear and professional.
