Student answer (Band 6.5)

Plenty of individuals complain of having difficulties to get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can cause a lot of problems, which I would like to discuss in this essay. Alongside that, I would also like to discuss about some possible solutions.

Firstly, I would like to start with the issues a person can face due to lack of sleep. Deficit of sleep can cause difficulty to focus on even the most simplest tasks like reading a book or driving a car, which can be extremely dangerous. If you are not able to focus, then it becomes impossible to conduct your day-to-day activities. Furthermore, it can add to mental stress which can further elevate your stress levels and disrupt your sleep, making it a catch 22 situation.

Before we discuss on how to resolve issues that cause lack of sleep, it is important to understand why it is happening in the first place. One major reason for lack of sleep in modern era is the use of technology, especially if you are using social media at night. If that is the case with you as well, doctors recommend to not use mobile phones at least one hour before you sleep. That helps the brain wind down and relax.

Another remedy that can help a person sleep better is to take a relaxing bath before they sleep. Doctors suggest taking a bath before bedtime, so your body is completely relaxed and you feel rejuvenated. This can help you going to sleep earlier and the sleep quality should really improve with this technique. I personally like to do this on a daily basis and this has been a game changer for me.

In conclusion, I would like to say that with the extended use of technology in modern times along with the fast pace has caused a lot of people sleep apnea, which can prevent them to focus on even the most mundane tasks. There are various remedies like reduction in screen time and some tricks to relax your body before bedtime which can help you get your sleep back.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the consequences of sleep deprivation and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact on focus and the role of technology. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the mention of 'sleep apnea' in the conclusion is a medical condition that was not introduced or explained in the body paragraphs, making it an inaccurate addition. To reach a higher band, you should ensure that all points are fully explored with more depth and that your conclusion reflects the arguments presented in the body rather than introducing new, specific medical terminology.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from problems to causes and then to solutions. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the introduction and the body could be smoother. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the information is presented in a coherent manner.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'day-to-day activities' and 'rejuvenated'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'deficit of sleep' (should be 'sleep deprivation') and 'discuss about' (the verb 'discuss' does not take a preposition). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding your range to include more topic-specific vocabulary related to health and lifestyle would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'difficulties to get' (should be 'difficulty getting'), 'most simplest' (a double superlative error), and 'prevent them to focus' (should be 'prevent them from focusing'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on verb patterns (e.g., 'prevent someone from doing something') and avoid redundant superlatives.
