Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the impact on relationships is mentioned, but the explanation remains superficial. The solutions provided, such as reducing caffeine and phone usage, are relevant but could be expanded with more depth or specific examples to reach a higher band. The essay maintains a clear position throughout, but the overall depth of analysis is more consistent with a Band 6 level, as some points are under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic progression of ideas from the problem to the solution. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'As a result' and 'For example'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the transition between sentences could be smoother to improve the flow. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the lack of sophisticated linking words keeps this in the Band 6 range.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'blue rays' (instead of 'blue light') and 'make your brain awake' (instead of 'keep your brain alert'). The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning, but there is little attempt to use less common or more sophisticated lexical items. To improve, you should focus on collocations and more precise terminology related to health and sleep patterns.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'One of the major problem' (should be 'problems'), 'get angry on small thing' (should be 'at small things'), and 'it strain your eyes' (should be 'it strains'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the errors in subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are noticeable. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
