Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
In recent years, many people have struggled to get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can reduce concentration and productivity during the day. However, this problem can be addressed by maintaining a regular sleep schedule and managing daily activities more effectively.
One of the main problems caused by lack of sleep is poor concentration at work. People who do not sleep properly may feel tired during the day and find it difficult to focus on their responsibilities. As a result, they may make mistakes or take longer to complete simple tasks. For example, an office employee who is extremely tired may enter incorrect information in an important report. Similarly, a worker who operates machinery may face a greater risk of accidents if they cannot concentrate properly. Therefore, insufficient sleep can negatively affect both employees and their organisations.
There are several simple ways to improve sleeping habits. Firstly, people should try to go to bed and wake up at approximately the same time every day. A regular schedule can help the body develop a consistent sleep pattern. Secondly, people should complete important tasks during the day instead of leaving them until late at night. For instance, someone who regularly works or studies until midnight could plan these activities earlier in the evening. People can also avoid unnecessary screen time before going to bed. These simple changes can help individuals develop a healthier and more disciplined routine.
In conclusion, lack of sleep can reduce concentration and productivity and may lead to mistakes at work. However, these problems can be reduced by following a regular sleep schedule and managing daily activities more effectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying both the consequences of sleep deprivation (reduced concentration, productivity, and safety risks) and potential solutions (regular schedules and time management). The ideas are relevant and logically extended with clear examples, such as the office employee and the machinery operator. The position is clear throughout, and the structure is balanced. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more depth in the solutions section, perhaps by discussing the role of lifestyle factors or professional intervention, which would further develop the response beyond the current straightforward suggestions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the progression of ideas is logical. Cohesive devices such as 'As a result', 'Similarly', 'Therefore', and 'Firstly' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth. The response demonstrates a good command of organizational features, making it easy for the reader to follow the argument from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate and appropriate for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'sleep deprivation', 'consistent sleep pattern', and 'disciplined routine'. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would characterize a higher band. The word choices are accurate, and there are no spelling errors. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more nuanced collocations or less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. Examples of complex structures include conditional-like constructions and relative clauses, such as 'People who do not sleep properly may feel tired...' and 'someone who regularly works or studies until midnight could plan...'. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. The writing is clear and error-free for the most part, demonstrating a solid control of basic and intermediate grammatical forms.
