Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, covering concentration issues, health impacts, and practical solutions like scheduling and reducing screen time. However, the development is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth. For instance, the discussion on health problems is quite brief and could have been expanded with more specific examples or consequences. The position is clear throughout, but the overall development of ideas remains at a basic level, preventing it from reaching a higher band. To improve, ensure that each point is fully explored with more detailed explanations or illustrative examples.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the argument. There is a logical progression from the problems to the solutions. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'To explain it' or 'To make it more clear'. Additionally, some transitions are slightly awkward, such as the sentence structure in the conclusion where 'Although' and 'However' are used in a way that creates a fragmented sentence. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow and coherence of the writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is a reliance on basic terms like 'problems', 'work', and 'good'. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary (e.g., 'productivity', 'regular sleep schedule'), there are instances of awkward phrasing and collocation errors, such as 'loss their concentration' (should be 'lose') and 'cannot fresh their mind'. The range is sufficient to communicate the main points, but the lack of sophisticated or less common lexical items limits the score. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise synonyms and collocations will help elevate your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'people loss their concentration'), missing articles, and incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'cannot fresh their mind'). Some sentences are also run-on or poorly punctuated, such as the opening sentence which is a fragment. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors suggests a lack of control over more complex structures. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would lead to significant improvements.
