Nowadays many people complain that they have difficulties getting enough sleep. What problems can lack of sleep cause? What can be done about lack of sleep?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays an increasing number of individuals complain that it is quite challenging getting enough sleep. This is believed to be as a result of working tirelessly and fatigue. Individuals to learn to organise their schedule and do not overwork themselves.
People tend not to get enough sleep especially when they work tirelessly. This is because some organisations usually overwork their employees and make them stay overtime even though it is not in their job description. For example, a media agency often asks their interns or junior colleagues to work more than the working hours which makes them have insufficient sleep.
Individuals who are exhausted from their daily work can also cause lack of sleep. This is because fatigue can lead to physical and mental exhaustion. In addition, it increases the rate at which dopamine is inhibited. For instance, when the body is stressed from a lot of activities and thoughts, it could reduce sleep quality and make the individuals active.
Lack of sleep can be minimized if the individual learns to organise their schedule. This can be done by creating a timetable that does not interfere with their daily routine and sleep. It will enable the individual perform better in their place of work. To illustrate, a company at Lafarage made sure that everyone follows the time-table and close work on time in order for them to prepare for work the next day.
Certain policies should be made in order to reduce overworking in the industry. This is because overworking could lead to stress and breakdown of individuals, in most cases death. For example, an employee at Nestle died at his office at night when he was working overtime. Investigations shows that he was highly overworked and has not slept for 3 days.
In conclusion, people complain that it is difficult to get enough sleep because of fatigue and they work tirelessly to exhaustion. This problem can be solved by making a schedule of daily routine and not overworking.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed both parts of the prompt: the consequences of sleep deprivation and potential solutions. Your ideas are relevant, such as the mention of workplace stress and the need for better scheduling. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven. While you provide examples, some, like the mention of dopamine inhibition, are not fully explained or accurately linked to the context of sleep. To improve, ensure that your supporting points directly explain the 'why' and 'how' more clearly. Your position is consistent throughout, but the depth of analysis could be increased to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In addition', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion', to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel repetitive. For example, the start of your paragraphs often relies on similar structures. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid. The paragraphing is appropriate, which helps the reader follow your argument, but more sophisticated referencing would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'insufficient', 'exhaustion', and 'inhibited'. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'make the individuals active' instead of 'keep individuals alert' or 'awake'. You also repeat words like 'overwork' and 'work' frequently. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher band scores.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally affect the flow. For example, 'Individuals to learn to organise' should be 'Individuals need to learn to organise', and 'Investigations shows' should be 'Investigations show'. There are also issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to limit your score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for small errors in tense and prepositions.
