Student answer (Band 6.5)

Having adequate sleep is a challenge for many people in the modern era. Therefore, the complain about less sleep is usually common among inidviduals. Although several reasons can be held responsible for the sleeplessness, from my standpoint, workplace competition and over-consumption of technology are the major causes of lack of sleep among people esepcially, youngsters. However, by maintaining a healthy work-life balance and changing the lifestyle, these issues can be addressed effectively.

One of the major reasons behind sleeplessness is distrupted sleep schedules due to competition in job market. In order to cope with the increasing workplace competition, numerous workers tend to over do themselve by either performing overtime or by doing night shifts. This not only reduces family time but also increases the chances of stress and anxiety among them. Consequently, the stress and anxiety often cause sleeplessness. Another significant consideration is yhe overuse of technological gadgets. The young generation is very prone to have prolonged screen time that sometimes, makes them lost the count of time. To cite a example, younsters often watch shows or movies on platforms such as Netflix and Prime Video and stay awake till 3 or 4 am. As a result, their sleep cycle distrupts completely.

Nonetheless, these issues can be easily resolved by certain alterations in individuals' lifestyles. To illustrate, by making a fix schedule for screentime and family time , people can not only avoid exessive consumption of digital devices but can also spend some quality time with their loved ones. In return, their lives become more organised and they can have proper sleep. What's more, a proper work-life balance can help individulas to have family time along with proper sleep. For example, if one knows how to manage their woork so they can meet their work deadlines along with managing their leisure activities, the stress level in them reduces significantly making them have sound sleep.

Taking everything into account, I finally conclude that while professional competition and prolonged screentime are the reasons behind the sleeplessness, it can easily be addressed by the effective time management and work-life balance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by identifying the problems associated with a lack of sleep, such as workplace stress and anxiety, as well as proposing viable solutions like maintaining a work-life balance and managing screen time. The writer's position is clearly stated in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as mentioning platforms like Netflix and Prime Video to illustrate screen time overuse. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise regarding youngsters and sleep schedules, and some ideas could have been pushed further into deeper analysis. Overall, the content fully covers the task requirements, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are structured into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing problems and solutions respectively, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'In order to cope', 'Consequently', and 'Nonetheless'. However, there are minor cohesion and referencing flaws, such as 'distrupted sleep schedules' and punctuation issues around parentheses or commas, along with some slight mechanical transitions. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader smoothly through the writer's arguments. These qualities firmly place the response in the Band 7 category.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for flexibility and precision, successfully employing less common lexical items such as 'work-life balance', 'over-consumption', and 'professional competition'. There are, however, several spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score, including 'complain' instead of 'complaint', 'inidviduals' instead of 'individuals', 'esepcially' instead of 'especially', 'distrupted' instead of 'disrupted', and 'over do themselve' instead of 'overdo themselves'. Despite these noticeable inaccuracies in spelling and occasional collocation slips, the vocabulary used is adequate to convey the message clearly without impeding communication, representing a solid Band 6 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional-like structures ('if one knows how to manage their work so they can meet their work deadlines') and relative clauses. There are frequent error-free sentences, but also a number of grammatical and mechanical errors present throughout the text. Examples include 'Having adequate sleep is a challenge' (acceptable, though 'Getting adequate sleep' is more natural), 'prane to have prolonged screen time that sometimes, makes them lost the count of time' (incorrect verb form 'lost' instead of 'lose'), 'a example' instead of 'an example', and 'fix schedule' instead of 'fixed schedule'. While these errors do not impede communication, they demonstrate a level of control consistent with Band 6.
