Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the problems associated with a lack of sleep and the potential solutions. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and generalized. For example, the writer mentions that working long shifts and using electrical gadgets are causes, but the explanations remain brief. The discussion on solutions mentions waking up early and exercising, but these points lack deeper elaboration or specific examples from personal experience. While a clear position is maintained throughout, the ideas would benefit from further extension to reach higher band levels. Therefore, it satisfies the requirements for Band 6.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay presents a clear overall arrangement with logical sequencing, moving from an introduction to causes, solutions, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is utilized appropriately, with distinct sections for each part of the prompt. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as "To begin with," "Another cardinal fact is," and "To tackle this problem." However, some referencing is slightly faulty or mechanical, and certain transitions feel abrupt. For instance, the transition into the third paragraph introduces "socialists," which seems like a misuse of vocabulary intended to mean society members or individuals. Overall, the organizational structure is coherent, placing it firmly at Band 6.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as "predominant factor," "cardinal fact," and "disciplined measures." However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing throughout the text. Examples include "This occuring could have ample of reasons" instead of "This occurrence could have ample reasons," and referring to individuals as "socialists." Furthermore, phrases like "scroll reels" and "bad sleeping cycle" could be expressed more naturally. While these lexical errors and awkward collocations do not impede general communication, they prevent the response from achieving a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or relative clauses like "people are not able to fulfill their desires which makes them to work long hours." However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and verb form errors (e.g., "makes them to work" instead of "makes them work," and "effects the mental health" instead of "affects the mental health"). Punctuation and comma splices also detract from the overall accuracy, such as in the opening sentence. Despite these issues, the meaning remains comprehensible, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 5.5.
