Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing the problems associated with a lack of sleep, such as insomnia, dementia, and reduced workplace performance, as well as solutions like strict timetables and hiring extra help. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive, placing the response firmly at Band 6. While the main points are relevant, sections like the discussion on hiring workers feel slightly tangential or underdeveloped in terms of directly solving a personal sleep deficit. To reach a higher band, the student should expand more deeply on the psychological and physical consequences of sleep deprivation with more precise examples, and ensure that the solutions directly correlate with improving sleep quality rather than just managing workload.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a clear overall arrangement and attempts to use paragraphing to separate ideas into an introduction, body paragraphs addressing problems and solutions, and a conclusion. However, logical progression is frequently hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions, such as 'To begin with, problems which they can face in long term.' Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, as seen in sentences starting abruptly without clear subject anchors. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often inaccurate or lack smooth integration, resulting in choppy transitions between sentences. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion requires better linking to achieve a Band 7 score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical resource is minimally adequate for the task, showing attempts at less common vocabulary such as 'contemporary society', 'insomnia', and 'dementia'. However, there are numerous noticeable errors in word choice and form, including 'inproper sleep' instead of 'improper' or 'inadequate sleep', 'memory lose' instead of 'memory loss', and 'overover' in the conclusion. Collocations are occasionally unnatural, such as 'complete their 8 hours of sleep' rather than 'get eight hours of sleep'. These errors do not entirely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures are frequently marred by grammatical errors and incomplete clauses, such as 'workers who work longer hours in the offices and do not feel as per the required hours'. Frequent errors in prepositions, verb forms, and sentence fragments (e.g., 'Furthermore, what could be done to fix their sleeping habits' used as a full sentence instead of an indirect question) cause occasional difficulty for the reader. While basic meaning is usually conveyed, the high frequency of grammatical slips prevents the response from achieving a Band 6.
