Student answer (Band 6.5)
In today's fast -paced society, getting sufficient sleep has become increasingly difficult for many people. Long working hours, excessive use of electronic devices and stressful lifestyles can all interfere with normal sleeping patterns. A persistent lack of sleep can have serious consequences, but there are several practical ways to address this problem.
One major consequence of insufficient sleep is a decline in concentration and productivity. People who do not sleep adequately may struggle to focus on tasks, remember information or make sound decisions. This can be particularly problematic for students and employees, as tiredness can result in poor academic performance. For example, a student who regularly stays awake until the early hours preparing for examinations may actuallly perform worse becuase of reduced concentration the following day. Moreover, chronic sleep deprivation can affect people's physical and emotional well-being, making them more irritable, stressed and less energetic.
Several measures can be taken to improve this situation. First, individuals should establish a consistent bedtime routine and avoid stimulating activities before going to bed. In particular, reducing screen time in the evening can make it easier to relax. Second, employers and educational institutions could promote healthier schedules by avoiding unnecessarily long working or studying hours. Finally, people who regularly experience severe sleeping difficulties should seek professional advice rather than relying on sleeping pills or ignoring the problem.
In conclusion, insufficient sleep can negatively affect concentration, productivity and overall well-being. However, by developing healthier sleep habits, reducing evening screen use and creating more reasonable daily schedules, both individuals and organisations can help people obtain the rest they need.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the problems associated with a lack of sleep and proposing practical solutions. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the student examining the impact of late-night studying on exam performance. The progression of arguments is logical, with the first body paragraph focusing on the consequences and the second exploring effective countermeasures. There are no omissions, and the scope of the prompt is completely covered in a balanced manner, earning a solid Band 7.5 descriptor match.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently structured, moving smoothly from the introductory thesis to specific body paragraphs and a concise conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph having a distinct central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'One major consequence', 'Moreover', 'First', and 'Finally' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text, although there is occasional minor repetitiveness in transition style. Referencing is clear and unambiguous, maintaining a smooth flow of ideas that aligns well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, suitable for Band 7. Expressions such as 'fast-paced society', 'interfere with normal sleeping patterns', 'chronic sleep deprivation', and 'professional advice' show a good grasp of less common lexical items. There are a few spelling and word-choice slips, such as 'actuallly' and 'becuase', but these are occasional and do not impede communication. Overall, the vocabulary is varied enough to discuss psychological, physical, and societal impacts effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over grammatical structures. Examples of complex sentences, such as 'People who do not sleep adequately may struggle to focus...', are handled well. There are frequent error-free sentences throughout the text, alongside good punctuation control. While minor typographical and spelling errors occur (e.g., 'actuallly' and 'becuase'), the grammatical errors are rare and do not impede the reader's understanding. This reflects the characteristics of a strong Band 7 performance for grammar and accuracy.
